  1. He has no knowledge of any team other than Man Utd. Not the best choice of host for a football phone in show.
  2. Here is my take on the top 4 (top 5?) contenders: Man City/Arsenal/Liverpool - a level above everyone else, including us. This will be the top 3 in some order. Brighton - good team but struggled last season and yesterday due to fixture pile up. Their European opponents are tougher than ours and should be a drain on them. Tottenham - been a bit lucky with their results and their playing style will get found out. No Europe will give them a boost in the league, however. Newcastle - strong squad and have experience of getting top 4 last season. Howe holds them back imo and have Champions League distraction. Man Utd - bit of a mess on and off the field but have the players and the money to spend their way there. Likely to improve. West Ham - statistically should be in the bottom half, although that's typical Moyes. Unlikely to sustain their position with Europa League also. Chelsea - call me crazy but I think they are putting a good team together. At some point it will click, but hopefully not until they are out of contention. The Villa - still a work in progress and our away form is not great but if anyone can find a way, it's Emery. I didn't think we would be competing for the Champions League at the start of the season but now it seems possible.
  3. They resembled the first team in the first half hour in terms of style of play and were only missing a proper striker to do the Watkins role. Got a little sloppy defensively towards the end of the half and gave up a couple of chances, and they scored from one. Sunderland pressed higher in the second half and we never adapted to it and were unable to control the game anymore. The comeback seemed inevitable. A yellow would have sufficed instead of a red for Ealing as he wasn't high and did get the ball. I know they are cracking down on players throwing themselves in like that but it didn't seem worthy of the same punishment as a Carlos Bocanegra-style horror tackle. Despite the defeat there were encouraging signs in that first half hour, and I would give Feeney Motm for his goal and a few Torres-style passes between the lines.
  4. Thought we were ok overall, and should have scored long before we did. There seems to be a lack of chemistry in the team with some of the new players, but that should improve as the season goes on. Ramsey will add another dimension when he returns also.
  5. Shame we couldn't hold on but a good performance regardless. Highlight of the game was the Brighton commentator crediting our academy for producing Gareth Barry. We signed him from the Brighton academy aged 16!
  6. Is Jimoh that kind of player or is he more attack minded?
  7. 19 year old attacking midfielder signed from WBA a few weeks ago. He was one of their best prospects a couple of years ago but didn't manage to progress to their first team. I remember him being good at carrying the ball through midfield and having a burst of pace, like a left footed Jacob Ramsey. He is well known to our academy staff so maybe they think he can make a step forward with us. Hope so, but the odds are against him given his age and the amount of competition. The best left footed attacking midfield prospects we have our probably Omari Kellyman and Travis Patterson who are both two years younger.
  8. For comparison, it took the Chelsea U18s 5 years to reach their first Youth Cup final after the Abramovich takeover and it took Man City 7 years after the Abu Dhabi takeover. Both clubs have dominated the competition since then but haven't featured in each of the last 3 finals.
  9. I'm guessing Zaniolo and Diaby will rotate positions between SS and right wing during matches. Bailey and Diaby did it last week. Not sure which one starts as the right winger.
  10. Thought he might get a championship move but at least he will be getting regular football under a manager who knows how to use him properly.
  11. Could someone ask why the club still has pricing categories for different teams when every match is a sell out please.
  12. The Sevilla fans rate Acuna highly, some even saying he is one of the top left backs in the world. They also say he is better than Moreno. That's usually a good sign when the fans of a selling club are upset the player is leaving.
  13. Missed the first half due to a technical problem. Villa IT support sorted that out quickly so well done there. Tommi O'Reilly and Tristan Rowe were the standouts in the second half for us. Our general play was pretty good and we missed two or three clear cut chances at 0-1. After the red card WBA kept the ball away from us. Losing Young to the red wasn't ideal but the way we conceded the second and third goals was poor.
  14. Once Brighton sign Kudus we will be the lowest spenders out of last season's top 8.
  15. Does anyone know when his contract runs to?
  16. Lazio may have finished 2nd in Serie A but they really aren't that good. The value of their squad on transfermarkt would rank them 18th if they played in the Premier League, plus their league starts a week later so we are further along with our fitness. Yesterday was a good win but the three friendlies against Newcastle, Fulham and Brentford were a better gauge as to where we are.
  17. You are a like a gunslinger! I was just about to post that, and about the players missing.
  18. In his post match interview today Emery said "I want to be competitive (in all four competitions) and we will need a lot of players". After seeing the drop off in preseason when our first teamers have been subbed off this may push him to bring more in.
  19. Never heard of him before he signed for us so what a pleasant surprise. He's really, really good. There were a few occasions where he was in on goal but we didn't play the pass. In time, our players should get accustomed to his runs and feed him more often.
  20. Shame we couldn't get over the line but I think the lads can be pleased with their performance overall, especially given the age of our team. #18 (Meade) was athletic and composed, #15 (Lynskey) was excellent overall, #17 (?) strong defensive performance, #14 (Ramsey?) was very skilful.
  21. The Porto gk looked about two yards off his line for every penalty. Anyway... thought we started well playing in a similar vein to the first team then lost a bit of control as the match wore on. Lynch, Carroll, Brannigan and Rowe were the stand outs. The winger (#17) for Porto also looked good, very pacy.
