Purslow clearly a bit misty eyed over Gerrard... But I think he wrongly thought he had all the ingredients to be the next great coach (think there's a reason that a British coach hasn't won the Premier League since Ferguson), from his experience of him as an individual at Liverpool. I think he was naive and used the credit in the bank to bring NSWE on board with hiring him.

You see. On Gerrard I think he had a lot of say, club signings in that time were probably Carlos and Kamara, but we wouldn't have been pursuing Digne, Coutinho et al without him in the hotseat. I imagine the relationship with Lange and his team is much better with Unai and the ship is going in a unified direction.

Listening to Totally Football Podcast... It sounds like Gerrard may have turned down an opportunity to manage Brugge - wanted too much money to be considered. Their new manager Scott Parker (who has, in fairness proven himself adept in the Championship). That'll probably be the best offer he'll ever get (Champions League team) - so doubt he's making a comeback any time soon. And Brugge have dodged a bullet.

That's fair. Find it wild that we ripped up a very decent transfer strategy for the guy from the Hyundai advert.

A naive signing for a club in our position. High wages, wrong age profile, high fee. And you absolutely need those players to be your top performers if you're going to make those moves, we've made two. Digne and Coutinho... And it's hardly been a rip roaring success in either case.

I hope this boosts Ollie's confidence. A decent performance all round, with two good finishes. I'll be glad to have Golden Gloves back.

Too much goes wrong afterwards. We weren't outnumbered or exposed. It wasn't great. But more on Konsa for not 'seeing it out' and Olsen for being Olsen.
