Darren Bent

I dislike Yorke as much as the Villan, but go get a video of that 95/96 season, he was involved in nearly every goal. His performances that season were the best for the club in the last 20 years. And yes I include Mcgrath 92-93 and Ashley Young 2008 in that. He was almost unplayable.

96/97 he was almost as good. I rate Bent highly but he has only been at the club 14 months, you need to do it for longer then that to be considered the clubs best striker in prem history.

What about assists?

What if Yorke also had 50 assists in that time?

I have no idea if he did or not. But purely basing a striker on goals scored is a bit narrow minded. It's certainly a huge part of what they should be judged on. But if you had one striker with 0.5 goals per game but only 0.1 assists per game, and one with 0.48 goals per game 0.5 assists per game, would you go with the former just because of his goal ratio?

This is what I am saying with regards to Yorke. He scored about 25 goals that season, but he also directly set up or played a huge role in nearly 80% of the goals that season. I am surprised the big boys did not get him earlier, but then again Villa were kind of one of the big boys then, 4th and 5th.

Dwight yorke can swivel he's a horrible slimy creature who should disappear to the depths of mordor and shout PRECIOUS over his gold he hoards....

As a man, and yes I know a few people who have met him, I agree, but on the pitch he cannot be questioned. From 95 to 2000 he was borderline world class. Anyway enough about Yorke, I want Bent to at least stay until January, he cannot leave now without saying bye to the fans.

Bent = 0.47 goals a game

Yorke = 0.31

Saunders = 0.33

He gulfs them.... bring on your next names for me to prove you wrong.

The difference you show are neglegable. 1 goal extra for every 9 games.

Saunders and Yorke added much more to the team. I like Bent. I think he is a good player. But we have had better strikers.

Out of interest, are you old enough to remember their performances for Villa during the early to mid 90s?

I am not trying to be disrespectul, but you cannot just jusdge them on goals alone.

Can I just add...

I don't hate Yorke, he'll always be my boyhood footballing hero. Bent has someway to go before he can etch his way into Villa Folklore in the same way.

Same for me. Although Dalian Atkinson was my first. He is a clearing in the woods as well. But was mesmeric for a couple of years.

We wouldn't be in the trouble we find ourselves in now if DB hadn't got such a bad injury, and i'm certain of that.

Disagree. Our problem has not been missing chances. It has been generating them.

You're entitled to your opinion, as am I. I don't agree with you though.

We score more with DB in the side.

Maybe would have scored more.

But would he have made the difference in losing 4-2 to Chelsea, 3-0 to Arsenal or a draw with Blackburn?

I am less than convinced. Which means we would be in the exact same position.

those were the glory years for me. and Saunders and Yorke were brilliant. But to me a strikers job is to bang them in whatever and thats im such a fan of Bent.

Congratulations on showing how stats are often misleading. If you think these numbers make Darren Bent a better footballer than Yorkie you are sadly mistaken.

Forget England, he was one of the top strikers in Europe, and proved that when he went to Utd and tore Champions League defences apart. As has been pointed out, he didn't play all his games for Villa up front.

Bent irritates the hell out of me with his inconsistency. He's always offside, can't trap a bag of cement, and for someone who made his career at Charlton playing up top on his own he can't hold the ball up to save his life. Misses a hell of a lot of chances as well, Bolton last season was embarrassing. Playground goal hanger, if we could get the same money for him we paid (we won't) I'd sell him in the summer no probs.
