Glad to see Robinson make the bench yesterday

10 mins on the pitch would have been nice though
Agreed. In my eyes we need to start giving the youth graduates some game time. I think from the youth lambert only have Burke a debut. Yes it has been a struggle for results and maybe not the best for putting in young players. But if we are continuing down the route of austerity we rally need youth ayers to come though. Even mcleish gave more debuts to the youth players

Arsenal U21 v Villa U21 Preview

Gordon Cowans has urged his Villa players to keep the momentum going as they return to action for the first time since hitting Newcastle for six.

The claret and blues travel to Arsenal in the Barclays U21 Premier League, just over a week after their sensational performance against the Magpies.

Although Cowans was thrilled with his team's attacking play, he is expecting a much sterner test at Boreham Wood this evening.

The coach wants to see Villa hit a run of form after a mixed start to the league campaign.

"These are the games you want to be playing in, against the top sides," said Cowans.

"Arsenal will no doubt have some quality players. It will be tough but it will be a good test and we'll go down there and see what we come away with.

"I thought the performance against Newcastle was very good. Towards the end of the first half I thought we started playing very well and causing problems up front with the front three - Graham Burke, Callum Robinson and Jordan Graham - pushing on.

"There was some real quality out there. We played some very good stuff and dominated the game.

"There was a sloppy little five-minute spell where we seemed to take our foot off the gas but we picked it back up and we finished really well and took our chances."

With a more experienced group at his disposal last week, Cowans opted for a 5-3-2 formation.

He revealed Michael Drennan is close to returning from injury, to further boost the team's firepower.

"The reason we played that formation was because we had five defenders and we need to get them all games," Cowans said.

"We had a slightly older group than usual and we've got Mickey Drennan to come back too which is another bonus."

Callum Robinson was the hero of last Monday's win over Newcastle, bagging a hat-trick in front of manager Paul Lambert.

The 18-year-old hotshot earned himself a place on the bench for Saturday's top-flight encounter against Cardiff.

"Callum has been outstanding," added Cowans.

"You see him in training every day and the way he works his socks off.

"The kid has so much talent and ability - he has got a real chance."

That looks VERY offensive! Some sort of 4-2-4 with Johnson and Graham in midfield?

Edit: Diamond according to the club's twitter feed:

#AVFC 0-0 #FFC - 5mins: Interesting diamond midfield for Villa. Johnson holding, Graham left, Burke right, Robinson behind Helenius & Bowery

Excluding Donacien the rest of them look rubbish. Some nice touches here and there but can't cross a ball to save their life. Dead balls including.

You can tell Helenius and Bowery are the first teamers by their passing and retention of the ball. The midfield want to have a million touches of the ball.

Just watched this game, lost 0-3 to Fulham. Bowery even looks out of depth at U-21 level. A poor misplaced pass from him led to Fulham's first goal. Makes the Heskey seem like Christiano Ronaldo in the goal threat department. Rather a young talent have a place in the squad than Bowery, hasn't really done anything in his career to date to deserve a place in a Premier League squad.

On the side note, we didn't seem to have any other central midfielders tonight other than Johnson. Drennan, who is very much a poacher, was playing in CM. Surprised they didn't promote an U18 regular to play in midfield.

Shame we are out of this competition, would have been a good experience for the young players and game time.

Watched it as well, and have to agree about Bowery, he was terrible and looks actually incapable of putting the ball into the net in any circumstances.

Donation was excellent for 83 odd minutes, but without replays I'm not sure if he was at fault for the goals, which all came late in the game.

Johnson had a nightmare in midfield. Kept on giving the ball away.

Helenius was okay, but missed two good chances.

The only players who might have a future in the first team on the evidence of this game I'd say would be Steer, Herd, Donacien, Helenius and Robinson.

Fulham shaded the first half, and Villa very much the better team in the second half until the exact moment that Bowery gave the ball away for their first goal. Shortly before the first goal the ref denied what seemed to me a quite obvious penalty when Jordan Graham was tripped just inside the box when clear through. Ref gave JG a yellow for diving. If that really was a dive, Graham needs a serious lesson in when to shoot instead of diving.
