Yes :? your point being...? Nothing really. Just thinking about your original comment about how there are many more Mandarin speakers learning English than vice-versa. legov Posted April 23, 2012 Share Posted April 23, 2012 Nah, vast majority of Mandarin speakers are mainland Chinese and they certainly don't grow up bilingual, unless you consider recognising McDonald's signs as fluency. The number of overseas Chinese (about 40mill I think) is really very insignificant compared to the population of China itself, so even if every Chinese person living outside of China grows up speaking both languages like me (which I don't think is true), it still means that more than 95% of the 1.3billion Chinese on the planet speak Mandarin (or some other Chinese language) as their primary tongue, without being any where near as equally proficient in any other languages as they are in Chinese.
