hogso
I've noticed alot of classic 80s pop tunes with player/club names being sung lately. And why not? The tunes are catchy, usually pretty simple, and lend themselves very well to being sung in large groups and having words changed. I wonder though; in 10/15 years time will we be chanting along to the tune of some righteous 90s pop? Maybe sooner? Will current 2010's pop ever be sung on the 'terraces'? How about a Villa version of Justin Bieber's smash hit 'Baby' - Villla, Villla, Villla, awww-like As Villa fans, should we consider pre-empting this trend and giving it a go now? I know there is a chants thread, but I went through a playlist of 90s pop the other day and couldnt see any reason why some songs couldn't be used for chants, and thought some would be pretty good. How about Whigfield's Saturday Night? Vi-la-vi-la-la (Dee Dee na na na) Saturday -after- noon, I feel the air is getting hot - Super Villa (Saturday Night, I feel the air Is getting hot - like you baby) Saturday -after- noon, play, I like the way you move - Super Villa Saturday night, dance, I like The way you move - pretty baby) It's party time and not one minute we can lose - Super Villa (It's party time and not one minute we can lose - be my baby) LALALALA-DI-DI-LALALALA SUPER VILLA How about the chorus from Crash Test Dummies' MMM-MMM-MMM? Viii-iii-iii-la (mm-mm-mm-mm) Viii-iii-iii-la (mm-mm-mm-mm) How about Britney Spear's Hit Me Baby? Score a-goal Villa, one more time! (Hit me baby, one more time!) In 30 years time could Sinead O-Connor's timeless 'Nothing Compares to You' be the You'll Never Walk Alone' of it's day? I am eager to find out. Tell me your thoughts. I actually love the idea of 'old' pop songs coming around again in the forms of chants at the footy. I know their are exceptions, with more recent songs being used, but there seems to be more of a fondness and ease about using so called 'classics'

The_Rev
Hopefully it will stop people singing everything to the tune of Sloop John B. I used to love that song, now I cant listen to it without hearing a million shitty **** chants in my head.
GarethRDR
No no limit, Holte Ends in the sky, We are so good, we don't need Habib Beye. Surely Lichaj ["Lee-High"] is an easier rhyme with "sky"?

Surely Lichaj ["Lee-High"] is an easier rhyme with "sky"? I never got out the habit of calling Beye, bye/bi. I guess this song only works for me then. Fine I'll sing it on my own and when the whole Holte end desperately wants to join in, I'll tell them no.

kidlewis
The police every breath you take is a good set of lyrics. fits well with watching football. Every breath you take Every move you make Every bond you break Every step you take I'll be watching you Every single day Every word you say Every game you play Every night you stay I'll be watching you O can't you see You belong to me How my poor heart aches with every step you take Every move you make Every vow you break Every smile you fake Every claim you stake I'll be watching you Since you've gone I been lost without a trace I dream at night I can only see your face I look around but it's you I can't replace I feel so cold and I long for your embrace I keep crying baby, baby please Every move you make Every vow you break Every smile you fake Every claim you stake I'll be watching you those are the original lyrics, if you look not a lot would need to change. Every breath you take Every move you make Every bond you break Every step you take I'll be watching you Every single day Every word you say Every game you play Every night i'll stay I'll be watching you O can't you see You belong to me How my poor heart aches with every step you take Every move you break Every pass you make Every goal you take Every claim you stake I'll be watching you Since you've gone I been lost without a trace I dream at night I can only see your face I look around but it's you I can't replace I feel so cold and I long for your embrace I keep crying baby, baby please Every move you break Every pass you make Every goal you take Every claim you stake I'll be watching you the mid 8 in bold is the most difficult to amend and keep the same rhyme and syllabals whilst keeping it relevant to football. if any wordsworths fancy having a go... I think this kind of song (a ballad) like YNWA is the song of current times most likely to suceed in being a terrace song for years down the line. doing something like bohemian rhapsody is too sporadic and random, whilst popular it won't convert to terraces. the other option is an anthem, a song where the chorus is repetitive in nature and the verses short and simple. Now we've won and we've lost but we keep the pace I dream at night I can only see our place I look around but it's you I can't replace I feel so cold and I long for a league race I keep singing Villa, Villa please tried above but it's bloody hard. flamingsombrero
If the wall to wall Champions League coverage teaches us anything it's that more call and response chants are needed in the English game. To take just one example; whilst the Napoli fans were booming out chants in Manchester, the City fans sounded like they were taking part in some sort of TOTP2 world record attempt. hogso
I really like The Eric Lichaj Song to No Limit by 2 Unlimited. Simple, catchy, well known tune. It would work with many, many names, I can easily imagine it being used as much as KC & The Sunshine Band is now. In fact I'd be quite surprised if it hadn't done a few rounds already in some guise or other?? Can't say I've heard it if it has though. Lee-high, Eric Lee-high, Eric Lee-high (No no, no, no, no no, no no, no, no) Eric, Eric Lee-high (Theres no limit) The police every breath you take is a good set of lyrics. fits well with watching football. Great shout! This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to see, a proper good, popular 90s song that could resonate well with football fans. tonyh29
I believe Spurs currently have a new catchy little number based around i wanna go home - Beach Boys sadly they are having a few teething troubles getting the lyrics to fit : His dad has never worked with elephants (or any animal for that matter)and his mum is a respectable lady as it turns out, works in asda in colindale. Once, there was this man whooooooo (once there was this kid who) Used to manage the noses (got into an accident) And now he's here at Villa Park (and couldn't come to school) but when he finally came here (but when he finally came back) His tie had turned from royal into claret and blue (his hair had turned from black into bright white) He said it was from when (he said it was from when) Randy Lerner had approached himmmm (the cars had smashed so hard) VII-III-III-III-LAA (mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm)

kidlewis
you want a song you don't need to change too much. Hence why Every Breath You Take, by the police is a close fit to that. YNWA has done so well partly because you just sing the original song.
