Barry Bannan

He has ability, and can come up with some good passes and crosses at times, but he is not a central midfielder. He could probably get away with playing in a 3 man midfield, taking up the advanced role, but we can't afford to play him alongside someone like Delph any longer.

I was once his biggest fan, but regrettably it's time to realise that the likes of Bannan, Clark & Delph are not good enough to be starting every week.

You are writing him off - for what reason? He could have got 4 assists if the strikers had scored.

Writing a player off because of the failings of others around him isn't fair.

I agree playing him alongside Delph isn't working well. Why blame Bannan for the fact Delph is not a specialist DM?

Delph is a more attacking player, needs to go to a club that will play him in a more attacking role.

Delph's attacking play is held back at Villa because he is asked to play a more defensive midfield role. He's not as versatile an attacking option as Bannan though, so will not get that chance at our club ahead of Bannan.

I'm not writing him off, simply stating that he isn't suited to playing centrally in a 2 man midfield. I could quite happily see him accomodated in a squad role, being played in a more advanced role when the occasion suits. But playing him in midfield alongside someone like Delph, KEA or even Westwood is an open invitation for the opposition to split us open and walk all over us.

Would you play Xavi in midfield?

I understand Bannan isn't Xavi. I mean if you literally had the real Xavi.

I want to know whether you have a prejudice against short players playing in midfield or whether you don't think Bannan is creative or good enough at passing for the central midfield.

Was a big fan of his, but it's just not there for me anymore. Whereas he used to play incisive passes (and not just Hollywood balls), it's either ticky tacky sideways or pinning someone on the wing. It makes for good numbers and possession stats but kills our game. Defends well in that he doesn't let his man by him usually but can't put in a tackle and he's just too static positionally. Before, he used to want the ball but now he seems to be dreading it when it comes his way.

Thought he had some good moments in the second half where he actually got forward and would do well in a 3 man midfield in that attacking role, but just can't be part of a central 2 pairing.

Xavi may be small but he has defensive qualities about him similar to Modric.

Bannan doesn't.

That's the problem (well part of it that and his lack of ability).

Which is why I would prefer Holman in the team.

(Though we should be buying another midfielder)

I don't have a prejudice against short players, no.

I have a prejudice against our midfield having their trousers pulled down on a weekly basis. As I say, Bannan has a role in the squad, but it's not marshalling the team in the centre of the park.

Lambert blamed the defending against Bradford.

Our midfield created the chances to win. All 11 could have worked harder but the midfield was not dominated yesterday.

As I say, Bannan has a role in the squad, but it's not marshalling the team in the centre of the park.

I agree, I think he should be more assertive and demanding, and try to play an even greater role in our attacks than he currently is doing.

Xavi has defensive qualities? So does Modric? Where do you get this from?

Not from statistics.

We agree Bannan isn't a defensive player at all.

This season Bannan has more tackles and clearances per game than Xavi and Modric, more interceptions per game than Xavi and is level with Modric on that statistic.

You could tell me Xavi and Modric play in attacking teams who have more possession so they don't get the opportunity built up high defence stats. I could reply that Bannan is playing in a team that is depressing his true attacking stats.

Just another note to say, Xavi is a football genius and I am not comparing Bannan to Xavi in ability.

Bannan isn't the weakest link in our team, you are quite right. And I'd be happy to keep him in the team if he had a De Jong type player behind him. But if we're not going to employ someone in that role, then we would need an absolutely rock solid defense, which we haven't got either. Our woes aren't down to Bannan, but replacing him with someone with more defensive ability would help to improve the team.

By watching them, how many times do I have to tell you statistics doesn't mean you know it all it doesn't tell the full story.

I'd be surprised if he hadn't, look who Xavi plays with and how games has Modric played and played full 90? exactly.

I could reply that Bannan is playing in a team that is depressing his true attacking stats

If he is that good he'd shine in this poor team, he could start with his "floaty" corners - or is that down to the team aswell?

lets no dick around here..barry bannan is championship player at best, ASTON VILLA should not be build a team around bb, play him this way or play him that.. last night we got spanked by bradford, most bradford players were free! we need to move on bb/delph/clark etc..sorry but the league does not lie or does the performances.

Lets take into account that Bannan played the 90 mins against Ipswich and the 90 mins against Bradford, so 2 games in 4 days, which can be very demanding. With that considered, Bannan was our most creative player yesterday. He should've had at least 4 assists, but thanks to the inability of Benteke's finishing...he didn't. I cannot believe some views here. Bannan was, by his standards below par, and yet he still was comfortably our most creative player. How people are blaming him for yesterdays result is mind boggling. Some Villa fans here clearly don't understand football. I mean surely the non-existent defense was at more of a fault(particularly Joe Bennett who was truly atrocious) or maybe it was our strikers inability to finish. I mean most people here look for reasons to hate Bannan or seem to want Bannan to fail so much there judgment is clouded from it, for example someone earlier said "The worst corner taker I have ever seen." I mean seriously? He created 3 clear cut opportunities with his corners, his delivery was fantastic throughout(only 1 corner that was caught by the keeper) yesterday, and people still criticize him. This lad as i mentioned before is a scapegoat, when things go wrong, for whatever minor reason, he is to blame and should be sold. When he is doing well, he gets branded as average for example, I remember against Arsenal people rating him 6/10 when he was clearly the best player on the field, but yet Westwood(who was definitely inferior to Bannan that game) got 8/10.

Bannan works best in a 4-3-3 system. or a 4-2-3-1 with a dominating defensive midfielder like N'Zonzi or Diame(2 players we definitely should have signed and I called them both for a good year now). Delph cannot impose himself enough to be a midfield enforcer, as Lambo wants him to be. Bannan isn't a midfield enforcer, but he can control the game through impeccable ball control and his range of passing, he's the only one in our midfield who can pick the ball up under pressure and still maintain possession. Defensively, Bannan isn't the best, but is good enough. Puts himself about and reads the game surprisingly well, i remember him getting a lot of interceptions this season. He won't ever dominate a game, but does his part...at times he's ran himself to the ground(for example Man Utd and Arsenal) Bannan is vastly becoming vital for us. Hope he stays on great little player.

It's been explained many times in various ways before... set pieces for professional footballers are training ground routines.

The type of corner delivered is the responsibility of the manager not the player, unless the manager tells the player to do what he wants - and a manager that did that probably wouldn't be a good one.

If Bannan's floaty corners don't float right we have reason to criticise. He floats them on target the vast majority of the time and gave the forwards some scoring opportunities against Bradford from his corners.

Con - I can't fault you for effort in this debate that's for sure!

I've already stated my opinion on previous pages and last nights performance hasn't changed my mind.

The amount of times Bannan gave the ball away last night was in-defendable. You state he could have made 4 assist last night. Shoulda woulda coulda. Someone needs to tell him that he's not David Beckham and to cut out the 40 yard wonder passes

Bannan's a nice footballer, but unless he plays alongside a beast of a midfielder like Diame, or Sandro for example, then he is too much of a lightweight.Bannan is the kind of player, that if you have faith in him, you build your team around. He would need at least 2 defensive minded midfielders alongside him imho.

Xavi has Busquets behind him, who is an incredibly underrated player.

Con we had this same discussion last week. If Bannan was playing well I could understand you backing him but he has been awful and as I pointed out and others also, stats don't tell the whole story. Forget floaty corners or whether they are floated correctly, Bannan is lightweight and gives the ball away to often therefore along with others therefore needs to be dropped.

You are rehashing the same old criticisms which I believe have been debunked with the help of statistics.

Statistics matter a lot in football because your team can play the best and still lose the game.

But I don't want to over-emphasise statistics because opinion can never be eliminated even when you use statistics. Like you say, stats never tell the whole story.

In this case though, I don't think I've said anything particularly strange in terms of positive comments about Bannan's play.

* I've not said he was the best player on the pitch. I've said he wasn't the worst and the midfield wasn't to blame. This opinion is supported by Lambert who said the defence was to blame, and by a Guardian reporter who gave Bannan a positive comment in his game write up.

* I posted criticisms of his play last night. I'm not posting positive comments and nothing else.
