I may be jumping the gun here but if Laursen is missing on Boxing day then who should captain the side in his absence?

Is it a chance for someone like Curtis Davies who has captain written all over him? Should it be NRC who if you cut him in half has captain written through his middle or is it a chance for some new blood in the role?

Or..... (and this would probably be my choice) is it a opportunity to welcome Barry back as skipper following his countless recent interviews and apparant new found determination to succeed with Villa?

What a great message it would be to the Sky 4, the media and the rest of the league. The world will be watching on Boxing day and it would be great to say, we've still got Barry he is wearing the captains armband again and we are taking the fight to the 'big boys'.

So what are your thought people, who should if needed replace Laursen as skipper?

(Thanks invisible mod father for the poll)

One more step along the road to recovery for Barry IMO

if not i could ee friedel managing it, has good communication, a lot of experience and after his record breaing starts and fine game against WHU the players must hold him in very high regard

I wouldn't give it to Barry in a million years - the way he treated us in the summer still wrankles with me any many others I'm sure. If he was committed he would come out and sign a new deal - he hasn't - but that's another argument anyway!

Captain? For me, give it to Petrov. Totally outstanding this year and he deserves a go.

Just posted in the original Laursen thread.

Curtin did indeed captain the squad earlier this season (I think in the QPR game). NRC wasn't starting, but Barry was.

Curtis for me by a country mile.

Sorry, whilst I like Gaz Baz, I don't think he should ever captain the squad again

Captain's duties in a football team:

ref - Heads or tails?

captain -Heads.

ref - Heads it is. Kick off or chose ends?

captain - We'll attack the North Stand in the first half.

ref - Okay.

Capello was right when he said he couldnt understand why English people put such importance on who wears the armband. Personally I think its because we are a cricket playing nation and the captain in cricket essentially means you are the manager of the team, and for some reason we give the captain in football equal weighting. On the pitch the captain has no specific duties. The ref might look to him to tell one of his own players to calm down but natural leaders do that anyway, you dont need an armband to show your team mates you can do that, they already know.

I very strongily disagree with you.

The captain very much has a role on the pitch, a captain is the one who sets the tone, who leads and when the chips are down either by force or by example forces those around him to raise their game in a way someone stood on the sidelines can't.

Think of the way Keane used to inspire his Man Utd side, of the way Viera would fight for the team and inspire those around him to fight, look at the way Gallas sat on the turf at Birmingham and Arsenal's season collapsed around them. Look at Terry playing for England in Germany last month.

The captains role is vital.

And they needed an armband to do that?

Not sure it really matters, the only ones I probably wouldn't give it to are Young, Agbonlahor, Milner. Pretty much every other first-teamer has been captain elsewhere at some point and would be able to do a fine job - and all this leadership on the pitch is a big reason we're doing so well.
