Reading one of the original criteria they were going to give a wildcard to a club who hadn't made CL but had historically good record in it. Imagine the outcry on here and elsewhere if Chelsea finished 10th and they still got in the CL on account of winning it recently. That suggestion quickly got dropped after the Super league fallout which happened a couple of weeks later. 5th place is still heavily skewed to the bigger leagues but at least it's still just about based on sporting merit. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
