Kiev Burning

Someone in this thread already made the correct comparison: Sudetenland.

Surely Northern Ireland is the better example?

Both Ireland and the Crimea were depopulated of the original inhabitants (tartars in the case of Crimea) by starving the population to death and then a new population was moved in; Russians and Scots-Irish respectively.

This is true of many other places: colonise some place with your own and then claim they are either threatened or persecuted.

It certainly was the case with the Boer wars and it was certainly hypocritical of the British to claim that Hitler's assertions about the rights of Germans in Danzig was something perverse.

The other example which is very similar to Crimea is how American colonists literally took over Texas which was part of Mexico, created a state and joined the Union; making it part of America.

So there are plenty of examples in world history and British history must provide more than its fair share.

grauniad

Why do people spell it like this?

Back when they were the Manchester Guardian printing the papers with typesetters apparently they frequently got letters jumbled leading to spelling mistakes like 'Grauniad' instead of Guardian. Well that's the explanation I have seen anyway.

Yep, the paper was famous for typos.  Private Eye keeps the nickname alive with merciless piss taking these days.

Ukraine will have to let Crimea go Russia won't go for an all out invasion ...looks like they just wanted to secure a strategic port and went down the vote route 98% turnout for even a Micky mouse vote can't be ignored

To put it simply. Soviet Union gave Russian Crimea to the Ukraine 60 years ago. The majority of the people there are and always have been Russian.

So when it looked likely that Ukraine would abandon ties with Russia in favour of the EU Russia decided to take Crimea back. Specifically because of their black Sea fleet based in Sevastopol.

This is illegal under international law. But at the end of the day Europe and The US will do nothing about this. But try maintain the integrity of the remaining Ukraine state.

There is really nothing else we want to do. Too much trade with Russia is required for the economy of the EU. Particularly German energy requirements.

It's sad for the Tartars and Ukrainian people now under Russian rule as they most certainly will be persecuted until they are driven from the Crimea.

There are quite a few people on Twitter making the entirely valid comparison between this and Israel, and noting that Israeli occupation of foreign territory and multiple murder of civilians has led to not a peep from the US, big, bold defenders of "freedom".

The comparison between this and Israel how, Peter?

Israeli occupation of lands with a majority population who are neither Israeli nor wishing to be Israeli?

Yes, the Israeli occupation is worse, as you hint.  That's the point being made by the comparison.

Obviously The United States look complete hypocrites. The did after all illegally invade Iraq and change its government. Something they've done almost non stop since WW2.

Russia is taking back part of its country it's always regretted giving to Ukraine after the illegal over throw of the government in Ukraine.

Can't say I agree with the actions of either state at all. People need to just accept this has happened now and move on. Be thankful there has been no large scale bloodshed here.

We trade with China and they just out right took Tibet where they had no support among its population to do so.

I've made the Texas comparison to a few people in America, they insist that was "far different." They can't really explain how though, except 'Murica, freedoms

Well, when you believe in 'manifest destiny' things are always different.

Or as Bobby Dylan put it:

Oh the Spanish-American

War had its day

And the Civil War too

Was soon laid away

And the names of the heroes

l’s made to memorize

With guns in their hands

And God on their side

Sad thing is that Russia will probably move for all of Ukraine and we still won't do anything.

I suppose it is no worse than doing nothing about illegal settlement of the West Bank, or the occupation and slaughter on East Timor, so we'll learn to live with whatever Russia decides to do with Ukraine.
