Crumpet
I recently read about how the Argentine league is calculated on the teams average over 3 seasons (promoted teams by the amount of seasons they have been in the league e.g west ham 2 seasons, palace 1 season) and the average points per game makes up the league. The thought behind it was to ensure that the 'big' clubs did not get relegated. I then thought how would the Premier league look on this principle. The table below would be the standings after 22 games this season. Club Average point per game Man City 2.21 Man Utd 2.19 Arsenal 1.98 Chelsea 1.92 Spurs 1.88 Everton 1.64 Liverpool 1.60 Newcastle 1.45 WBA 1.20 Southampton 1.20 Fulham 1.16 Swansea 1.16 Stoke 1.14 West Ham 1.06 Aston Villa 1.05 Hull 1.05 Palace 0.91 Cardiff 0.81 It shows how hard the argentine league makes it for new teams. And how a good season can save you from relegation fights for the next couple, see WBA.
Shillzz
And how a good season can save you from relegation fights for the next couple, see WBA. Yup - that's why Argentina introduced it in the first place, to prevent any of their big clubs (i.e. River Plate) from getting relegated.
bannedfromHandV
Didn't work though did it? Didn't one of Boca / River Plate get relegated.....
Crumpet
River plate did eventually in 2012 I believe. Unfortunately it would look like we wouls be the River Plate of the premier league before long.
Zatman
not just River, Independiente have gone down as well, which in terms of continental success is the equivalent of Real Madrid going down
sne
River plate did eventually in 2012 I believe. Unfortunately it would look like we wouls be the River Plate of the premier league before long. As long as we win the league 34 times before we're relegated and then bounce right back up i'd be ok with it. Speaking of River, let's ask them if they can give us Manuel Lanzini for free
Panto_Villan
Rare I see a topic and think "that's genuinely interesting" but I got that feeling today. Props to you, sir. It'd be depressing that the club would literally still be escaping the shadow of McLeish if results were averaged over three years.

WhatAboutTheFinish
I love how under this system Villa could theoretically win every game next season and still not even qualify for the Champions League...sounds fair!
dAVe80
William McGregor would be spinning in his grave! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
jimbojames
Doubt I could afford the odd away game so good job we're not. Strange way of doing things mind, not really a competition.
Phumfeinz
If Villa were in Argentina I probably wouldn't support them.
thetrees
Argentina also have 2 leagues per year, summer and winter. I missed Boca-River Plate when I was in Mar del Plata a few years back as I was flying to BA.
Adam_
Sounds like a terrible system. I'd happily watch Man U get relegated and not be given 2 more seasons to save themselves.
Rovers13
The one redeeming quality of this system is that every game is meaningful, teams can't take off the last five or ten games because they're mired in midtable mediocrity
penguin
I can't stand Argentinian football, every other game is 0-0.

Stevo985 Posted January 29, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted January 29, 2014 A league table if we were in Nigeria would be frightening, seeing as we rely on our away form, and in Nigeria, nobody has a good away record!
