    I mean...he's been our best attacking player for the last six months probably imo. It's not as if he hasn't played at all - it's pretty obvious he delivers when on the pitch. Not only is his attacking output very good in limited minutes, but he also works his f*ckin arse off. It's not exactly surprising that people want him to start. Sanson and Gil were just like "why don't you give it a go?" This is more like: "are you blind?"

    I just don't get why he seems to be #1 CM no matter what?? Like, he's a great guy and a real servant to the club but if he's playing 90 mins every week next season it's gonna be really annoying unless he substantially improves.

    What? Wilshere was absolutely quality ability-wise. Just an absolute crock. Barkley also fits into that category but with clear attitude problems. Ability wise no question he is a good player though. Sometimes it goes one way, other times the other.

    Guess that's down to philosophy. If it was Grealish against Philogene-Bidace I'd say fair enough. But McGinn has been average and could've done with at least one rest - not a massive downgrade.

    Our season was essentially over about 12 games before the end of the season. No need to be sarcastic - many managers give young players a chance in the situation where there is not a great deal riding on the games.

    If anything this only reinforces my point. What's the point of giving such a proven player 90 minutes every game? You know exactly what you're getting with McGinn. There wasn't exactly a ton of pressure.

    People act as though our CMs are so outstanding that Carney can't possibly be given starts, but ironically our best CM is probably Ramsey, who only came good when he was given...starts! Still utterly baffles me that McGinn - despite being the absolute definition of average Prem player - played 90 mins every single game he was available last year when we had nothing to play for.

    I just don't understand why the media and ex pros defend him so much. Tactically, he is oblivious. Also, the Channel 4 lady said he took "full responsibility" but he actually blamed his players for chasing the game too much and then basically blamed being too attacking! He said: "we ended up having too many attacking players on the pitch." Before Stones got sent off we had Guehi, Stones, Walker, James, Phillips, Saka at LWB + were 0-3 down. He then brought Maguire on for Saka.

    Season before that he was our worst player, bar maybe Samatta. Season after his good one looked more like 2019-20. His head drops and his peak is nowhere near Digne's.

    It's fine to question and I tend to agree generally. But you are dying on a "Matt Targett is worth more than £12m-£15m" cross harrrrd mate. He isn't! He's average and incredibly inconsistent for us. £12m-£15m for a back-up player is a good deal.

    Yes. Cost us more goals than anyone. When he was having a below average game it would turn into a horrific game. Didn't understand how close to be to Mings and was not fit enough. Regularly "bottled it".

    Shocking in 2019/20, good in 2020/21, not great in 2021/22. He's not reliable and is the definition of inconsistent which Gerrard hates. More than happy to see him go for £15m.

    Disagree on Luiz and McGinn plays every minute so clearly Gerrard likes him. Nakamba can obviously go.

    Obviously he will be better than that after coming back in for the first time in months, but people on Twitter seemed to forget he's been doing it for 2.5 years in these last few months. Never in a million years good enough to be first-choice.

    He's not nailed on for the World Cup, but agree. Villa fans have worshipped Vassell, Gabby, even Luke Moore more who are all vastly inferior players.
