  1. I would far win the FA Cup then finish 4th this season. It’s tangible, real glory and a trophy. Look at Newcastle this season, getting KO’d in the group stage of the CL is depressing
  2. Could this now be an opportunity for Stevie G to land his dream role?
  3. Spurs for me are a talented squad of players with a fresh tactical system that’s taken the league by surprise and is helping them hugely. Their biggest deficiency as I see it is the mentality (losing leads, going on losing runs etc). It’ll be interesting to see if teams wise up to their tactical approach in the second half of the season or if the adjustment comes next year (probably more likely). I think Arsenal are an example of a team who are suffering from the league cottoning on to their system. It also reminds me of the MON years where as the years progressed teams understood how to negate us and it was just a solid defence and winning mentality that got us over the line in lots of games. With Unai though I feel that we have the ability to evolve tactically, combined with the winning mentality and culture of growth. Put it another way, even if Spurs pip us to top 4 this season, I’m more confident in Villa long term (irrespective of FFP and spending power)
  4. That is massively pessimistic. What’s that opinion based on?
  5. Do you reckon Jack would get back in this Villa team? If so, where would Emery play him?
  6. One thing I just realised is that this team have a number of players who’ve actually won leagues and trophies: Martinez, Digne, Carlos, Torres, McGinn, Zaniolo, Tielemans, Diaby Having players who’ve got over the line to win something is so crucial
  7. I’d like to see us recruit a midfielder who can act as a back up/alternative option in the double pivot. I think we need someone with experience, maybe even 30+ but with Champions league quality…a bit like a Thiago/Jorginho. Happy to play 20-30 games a season all comps. Think it’s essential if we make CL next year. Beyond that, an attacking/high quality option at right back with Matty Cash to become a valuable squad player. Finally, a versatile attacking option who can play up front if needed Guessing none of this might be achievable in January
  8. Thank you Unai for what you’ve done! Has a manager ever transformed a team so quickly and consistently? It’s just remarkable. I can’t believe what we’re witnessing
  9. Our ability to draw a line under bad results and stop the rot quickly is essential for a high finish. Spurs are a talented team but they have shown two worrying traits we don’t have: - losing when leading - going on a multiple game losing streak I’m genuinely really impressed with how this team dealt with the Man U disappointment by beating Burnley. I was sick to my stomach at the Man U loss and really thrown so for them to just win the next is mightily impressive mentality
  10. Quote from Independent article on Gerrard’s plight at Al Ettifaq: ‘But then that’s the other trap of the Saudi Pro League: you largely lose your right to sympathy. If football management is a meritocracy, you earn your corn not just through performance but the decisions to take to move where and when and what for. If Gerrard didn’t foresee that he faced more reputational dangers than the 30-somethings he signed, he was a fool. He took the money and ran himself over’
  11. Get back in your box and wallow in frustration and dissatisfaction whilst Villa march onwards and upwards
  12. It was so important to bounce back from the sickening United result with a win. The lads wouldn’t be human if they weren’t carrying some mental scarring into today. The best teams reset and get the win after a setback. Big three points against Burnley gives us the platform to rebuild confidence and form
  13. Agree with the comments, close this thread.
  14. I’m 35 and been following Villa since I was a little kid and they always, always do this. It’s as sure as the sun. You get the hope and then you get stung (usually by Man U)
  15. I don’t think the Sheff U draw is this big disaster it’s being made out as. If we’d played really badly I’d be more worried. It was just one of those frustrating nights where we didn’t quite click, they were incredibly defensive and resolute and the little breaks didn’t go our way. It also dampens down the hype/expectation/pressure which is mad considering we’re still only 1 point off top at Christmas!!! The reality now though is Man U and Burnley are both must win in the context of ‘title race’. The pace is relentless if you have aspirations to win the league
  16. Frustrating draw with Sheff U but at least Al Ettifaq lost again tonight There’s always someone in a worse situation
  17. Take the point and move on. We’re probably not title contenders but let’s keep pushing. Remember Gerard’s Villa got a point at the Etihad last season
  18. Just have to stay patient here. They’re sitting in and playing for the 0-0.
  19. IMO Matty Cash has to stay as part of the squad moving forwards. He’s a model pro, with a great attitude and loves the club. You don’t just throw that away because there may be a slightly better technical option. Also as we improve as a club we need to develop more squad depth. Do you think Cash would be happy with say 25 games a season including cup competitions and European minutes? I think he would as he’s openly stated he loves the club and his international ambitions are covered with Poland
  20. I agree re rest and rotation. If we can’t pick up results with one player missing for a few games then we don’t deserve to win the title/qualify top 4. I expect we’ll be seeing a lot of the ball against Sheff U and Burnley at home so maybe Tielemans can slot in next to Dougie. If we can back ourselves to beat Sheff U and Burnley, I’m not opposed to keeping it really tight at OT and playing for a point (I doubt that’s what we’ll do though) In any case Kamara can rest and reset now ready for 2024
