  1. Don't you think Celtic are bigger than Villa?
  2. Mat Kendrick has tweeted that he's trying to get the latest on this. Be a good swift start to the summer if it comes off.
  3. Not seen him play. If Tonev and Austin are coming in does that suggest a change of system from Lambert?
  4. Express Star claim a deal is close but can't see it anywhere else. I reckon Austin could be great for us but we'd have to change the system to 2 up front through the middle surely.
  5. Would rather have Delph Westwood Sylla Gardner, and possibly even Holman Bannan and El-Ahmadi in the team ahead of Spearing. I think the numbers in central midfield are already crowded. This is the area where any signings would have to be good enough to go straight into the side and improve us. Centre back, left back and reserve goalkeeper must be higher priority at the moment.
  6. Agree we mustn't be held to ransom but we've just had the best season I can remember for a long time of goals being scored by 3 or 4 different strikers, and we have afew different threads now that seem to be saying "he can go we can do better". I'm not saying give them whatever they want, but I think if we let players like Benteke and Weimann go now instead of building around them, then next season we will effectively just be starting Lambert's transition all over again, 12 months on. Big steps backwards after seemingly moving on a bit.
  7. SSN are going with Benteke talking about leaving as their main story this morning. If the money is right then lets just move on. Like SeanO there is no point in worshipping any player every player has a price. I hope he is sensible about the thought of moving to a mega club when he takes into account his status and form here, and how that may change elsewhere. Maybe Gayle back on the radar?
  8. Apart from the Delap like lobg throws I don't really think we'll notice he's gone. Lowton will always play for Lambert and I think Lambert would rather put Herd in as a back up.
  9. I'll be gutted if he goes and a bit worried to be honest. If Bent goes then 12 months down the line if we lose Benteke also we'll have nobody.
  10. I think he's a good option we need to keep him. He's one of the few players we have at the moment with that turn of pace and trickery.
  11. I thought in the early days McLeish got some decent attacking performances. Norwich and Blackburn at home spring to mind. As his season went on we just went more and more into disarray. You could see how much we relied on Bent playing, and the personnel and system in the end didn't match up with so many academy players HAVING to play. Lambert eventually found a system that I think we can maintain with the decent numbers we have in certain positions. I hope Lambert's philosophy can continue with the people he's able to bring in.
  12. Do you think the existing player contracts will start getting sorted quickly - as in next week to ten days? I think we could do with a lot of that sort of stuff being sorted before we look into new players in June time.
  13. Before we appointed McLeish it was my belief that any manager should be given two seasons before a cast iron judgement could be made on them, and I certainly think Lambert is worthy of this more than any other Villa manager in recent memory. I'll probably never get over the disappointment of Bradford and what might have been against Swansea in a final, but boy we won some really big games through April and early May to scrape out of it. Lambert will pretty much have his very own starting 11 next season, likely exception of Gabby, and next season should be the start of any real conclusive assessment. I'm delighted we've stayed up and I'm pleased that we're on a firmer footing financially. Other than that I hope next season is a HUGE improvement on this one.
  14. I think we need two really top options in there in the back four with Lowton and Vlaar. I think Westwood should be a starter in August with TWO other quality players in the centre for a mixture of power, ball winning and goals, added to what Westwood gives the team. Delph, Sylla, Bannan and Gardner if I had my way would form a strong looking midfield squad outside of the first 11. I'm happy with the front 3 of Benteke, Gabby and Weimann. If Bent leaves though we could do with another big target man of a striker who has the goals in him to compete with Christian. Bowery I'm not sure, I like the kid but I'm not sure he has the quality to consistently score at this level.
  15. I also think too much emphasis is being put on the Arsenal Wigan game. At the end of the day we had the points. We got really good wins against all of the teams around us from February onwards. Wigan had to match it. They couldn't. We've been on an encouraging upward curve I would say since half time vs Newcastle at home.
  16. If there is any chance we are looking to sell Benteke then Bent can't leave surely.
  17. I think we've done well when the pressure's been on! Think this has a bit of a fizzle out potential to it. Hope he goes with a team and players that may feature next season. Think it'll be a draw. Guzan Lowton Vlaar Baker Bennett Sylla Delph Westwood Weimann Agbonlahor N'Zogbia
  18. Mindless post on his twitter account, puts villa fans in a bad light but anyone with any sense can see Savage's 'Villa fans true colours' response is a pretty poor comment also. I wasn't bothered by the prediction, if anything QPR buckled under the huge pressure of everyone expecting them to do well. I knew in my heart of hearts there'd be 3 teams below us on May 19th.
  19. As happy as I am that Benteke has been such a big player for us, I do have a flicker of disappointment with Lambert over DB to be honest. I think he gave him the captaincy but then stripped him of it very quickly. Bent and Benteke together didn't work out in the Southampton away game, and then that was just the end of him to be honest. Quality player. Will always be tinged with a bit of sadness when he goes he could gave been a legend here.
  20. I've quite liked him but any posts about who we should drop are over optimistic for me. Sylla Delph Westwood and Gardner need to be pushed by at least 2 other quality midfielders.
  21. Think Figueroa may be an improvement on Bennett. Really wouldn't be bothered by any other bottom 3 player to be honest. There's better out there at the right price.
  22. At times this season was horrible horrible. But my goodness we pulled out some massive results from Reading, QPR, Sunderland and Norwich. If we can snatch big results from huge matches like that undef Lambert then I am very positive for the future. Think a lot of the personnel he's brought in have been excellent, a few will need replacing with better. Onwards to next season and the top 8.
  23. I've been a keen supporter of him so biased but Lambert deserves great credit. Turned it round after a dreadful dreadful first half if the season. I think and truly believe he has learnt from his mistakes, and given the support I have high hopes he can turn us into a good side next year. UTV! Lambert's Lions!
  24. In before the lock!! So proud of our young lads for coming back from incredibly bad form and results over Christmas to get over the line. This has nothing to do with Arsenal. This is down to the bottle and gutsy talent shown against Reading, QPR, Sunderland and Norwich. Brilliant stuff from Benteke, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Westwood and Guzan. I also think Sylla and Baker coming into the team made a difference. Mentions to the backroom team as well and the fans who have just been awesome this season. Aston Villa = Premier League
  25. Stuff the odds. Throwing your money down the toilet. We are going to do it. Because of what we've done, forget anyone else.
