  1. a striker as we know it today is extremely rare, as managers/coaches place different value on different skills. Gone are the days of having a poacher as your starting striker in the PL & expecting him to get 15/20+ goals... teams will get torn apart as the game has become extremely tactically based. I think this really is the point I am trying to make. There are no realistic upgrades on Ollie for us in this current market. That's why we took the 20m ish gamble on Duran (and Wilson in the youth ranks for example)... that might be the case, but my point is that Ollie is one of the guys considered to be in the "upper echelon" of strikers in the PL. He starts for at least 75% of PL teams. Well, every PL team except from Man City (and even they are being linked with him) would do the exact same based on him only being 18 and what potential he has shown thus far. But if we were only looking at the short-term (this season) for example, I wouldn't be swapping Ollie for Ferguson. Especially considering we know what level Ollie brings to us (upper mid-tier of striker in the PL), while Ferguson has had only 24 PL games.
  2. yeah, I don't really see downside to a one year deal for him
  3. there's a reason I pay more attention to podcasts with the likes of those who you mentioned, then some of the usual crowd who analyze games on tele.
  4. Selling Sanchez, so they don't really have a lot of center back depth.... especially if Romero gets injured again
  5. would be an interesting pick-up on a free. Provides depth/competition without eating away at FFP and gives us an exceptional penalty taker for the ECL. Not sure that it is us though, I agree with @Villatillidie95that Luton would make a ton of sense. Experienced in both the PL & Championship
  6. Davinson Sanchez is going to Turkey, which really depletes the depth of Spurs CBs
  7. Outside of Man City, every team in the race for Europe can beat each other. If City don't win the title by at least 10 points (not including any ahem off the field issues) then something has gone badly.
  8. Agree with what @Mark Albrighton says, that it's better the points dropped are against the better sides than those who we should be finishing above. My other point is that I'd much rather have Liverpool & Newcastle coming to Villa Park in the end stretch of the season than right at the beginning. Getting the hardest fixtures out of the way earlier
  9. Not sure that the answer would have been to switch our style of play just to accommodate archer. I feel like he would've been more of the backup to Diaby in that hybrid second striker role.
  10. It really is a good thing that we got Newcastle (A) & Liverpool (A) out of the way this early in the season.
  11. Duran was above Archer for backup striker & Archer doesn't really play the striker role we usually employ.
  12. outside of his ballooning shot in the first half, he was invisible.
  13. not necessarily his fault, but this is the kind of game he is absolutely not made for. Liverpool closed him down and he didn't have the time and space that other teams would afford him. It's just the type of player that he is. Certain games are more suited for Moreno, certain games are more suited for Digne.
  14. wonder if he goes in for Kamara at some point this season. not sure why, but it feels like we play better with him partnering Luiz than Kamara...
  15. really didn't understand subbing him off when there were probably 5 or 6 players who had worse games than him. position wise, I guess is the argument, but he was not the problem (far from it tbf)
  16. easily our best player and I don't remember the last time he had a bad/poor game. Even when the rest of the team has an off game, Dougie rarely goes down to that level of performance.
  17. this x100. he will look great vs teams where we have control of possession a lot as his distribution is world class. But playing a team like Liverpool where he will have to defend is not ideal. His lack of pace will get exposed vs teams with very pacey players as it was today. The Mings injury probably effected Unai's ideas with how to play with Pau throughout the whole season.
  18. that was painful. at least we got Liverpool (A) out of the way for the season (also Newcastle A)... Luiz is easily our best player and him/Diaby were the only ones to come out with any credit today. Bailey was alright as well, don't think he should've been the one to come off. Duran showed more than Ollie in his cameo today, and that's not saying much. Pau was always going to struggle in a game like this, consistent pressing from Liverpool's forwards got to him Hope Diego Carlos' injury isn't bad but who knows... good that we have the break McGinn was invisible today, Kamara was bad just like the Newcastle game - Clearly missed Moreno & JJ on the left, Digne was in no mans land quite often today. I know why we played with the high line, but it still makes me think why does Unai play with it when we are playing a team who have extremely pacey forwards that can easily expose it. Núñez probably could've had a brace with the chances he had.
  19. came here just to post that. Boubacar looks extremely leggy and hasn't been good
  20. at this point, I'm happy that we got Newcastle and Liverpool away out of the way right now (at the beginning of the season). We clearly miss JJ and Moreno + their link on the left.
  21. Tim Howard on Ollie not making the England squad "there are like 6 or 7 players that I don't understand in the England squad."
