hdmi ought to be easier as it carries video and audio signals. It's actually a digital version of the component output, so will be less degraded (in theory) on a longer cable. HDMI also carries the HDCP signal so you can play protected content.

The snapdragon in my Nexus 4 has some kind of snapdragon fu which makes it charge much quicker. There's also a snapdragon app which learns your useage and saves your battery. Also worth a look.

You can use HDMI, but vga carries the same signal as component, so you could get one of these leads. As for screen set up, try this.

Yeah, you need root. Basically in PC world it would be that you're looking to reinstall Windows. Root = permission to (amongst other things) overwrite the previous android installation. It could be that you want to overwrite with a stock ROM, or cyanogen's version or or or, but you need root.
