    Energy Bills

Lots happening in the country at the moment, I’m personally waiting to see what my new tariff looks like as I’ve been moved across from The Peoples Energy to British Gas. As they’d gone bump I cancelled my direct debit with The Peoples Energy to avoid my money going into a black hole. Now I’m getting grumpy emails about it, my payment isn’t even due until next month.
  2. VT - I'm stressing, and I really could do with some sound advice from knowledgable people! I'm 25, working in recruitment, but I have hit a bit of a wall. I'm thinking I do not want to be working within this arena anymore. I don't have a degree, which limits me massively as far as I am concerned because every job I see they want someone of 'degree calibre'. I have never known what I wanted to do, I just drifted through school and got myself 10 GCSEs then took a couple of A-levels with the intention of going to uni. I had a place confirmed but then was offered a full time job, which I took. I have absolutely no idea of what to do with my life, I have so much ambition and desire to succeed, but god knows what in. It's stressing me out more now because the missus wants to buy a house etc and I am a little worried about losing my job for whatever reason and then not being able to find anything else. Does anybody have any sound advice to give, or know of any opportunities within the Nhants, oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire areas that might be coming up? Ironic really considering I work in recruitment eh? Thanks all.
  3. Hello friends, Couldn't see a money thread so thought I'd start one, apologies if one already exists (and Mods definitely not spamming any EZ-Money type thing I promise) Was talking stocks and shares with a buddy the other day, I've had some decent returns in the past through employee sharesave schemes, but since moved into a different line of work that can't offer such benefits. Was wondering if anyone invested privately and how they make their decisions? Also, how much do you reckon you spend a week at work? How do you feel about it? Safe x
  4. Hello all, As I am not really wanting to Break up with a girl I thought I would start up this thread. I have been seeing this girl for a couple of months. She is funny, beautiful and I really like her. She has an 23 month old son from a previous relationship who is amazing too. Her previous relationship was very violent physically and mentally and ended when her ex husband threatened to burn the house down with her and the baby inside. She lives on high alert and always has a bag packed by the door in case he finds her. No one, apart from immediate family, is allowed to know where she lives (although she has told me). She is hoping that her ex will move back to Sierra Leone in a few weeks (from what she has heard). My issue is quite selfish...... I really like this girl and her son but I am worried that her previous relationship means that I have to be 'whiter than white' and I am always on my guard around people she knows. Her family is very protective (understandably!!!) and as such when I met them last weekend it was kind of like going for an interview. I just want to relax with her but I always feel like I am walking on egg shells around those who know her. I dont want to be held up as the 'saviour of her perceptions of men' and equally I don't want to be judged by her family to this degree. It just seems really early in a relationship with all this heavy stuff. On the flip side she is fantastic. What do I do?
  5. Hi all , I’m due a total knee replacement next week and expecting a tough few weeks - any of you been through it and any help or advice much appreciated
  6. Following the success of Bedlam on Channel 4, I thought it would be interesting to get people's perspectives on mental health problems, particularly as at any given point 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in their lifetimes. FWIW I have not experienced a mental health problem but I work in the field and find the stigma to be the worst thing, particularly in terms of stopping people looking for support
  7. Hello all! Off to view a house tonight, (scary stuff!), and as its the first one I've liked enough from a quick peruse of Rightmove to go and see its my first proper house viewing. I wondered if any of my fellow VT'ers have any advice on the house viewing / buying process? Cheers!
  8. So obviously I can't go into detail, but my ex is, after 2 years separated (now divorced) that she can stop me seeing our children on a whim, either by taking them on holiday on the agreed days Im supposed to have them, saying that she's busy and with them Where's best to go with this, I've never ever wanted to go down this route but it's become ridiculous, any advice is greatly appreciated, the legal aid question I can't get a definitive answer online, and the solicitor I have contacted straight out said it was £199 just to have a consultation
  9. Couldn't find a thread on this so I'm just making a general one. Any investors or stock market addicts here? What's your view on 2019? What's your view on Trump, Brexit, oil prices, inflation, earnings yield in general? I'm for the first time in a long time a bit on the fence. Normally I'm very positive, but right now I feel there's so much uncertainty in a market that's quite pricy.
  10. I expect most people to just stick to the one or two aftershaves they get for Christmas 'til they'e empty, but some people like myself enjoy collecting them. Considering I only started getting into collecting them about six months ago I have a decent haul of 15 and many samples I'll get round to buying a full bottle of. Hugo Boss - Boss Bottled Thierry Mugler - Pure Malt Yves Saint-Laurent - La Nuit de l'Homme Christian Dior - Dior Homme Intense Creed - Green Irish Tweed Creed - Aventus Jean-Paul Gaultier - Le Male Christian Dior - Fahrenheit Christian Dior - Fahrenheit Absolute Issey Miyake - L'eau D'Issey Pour Homme Ralph Lauren - Big Pony #4 Burberry - London Burberry - Touch Lacoste - Elegance John Varvatos - Vintage Some more expensive than others. My top three based on smell alone would probably have to be Green Irish Tweed, Dior Homme Intense and La Nuit de l'Homme.
  11. Lost my Mumsnet password. New Year and a fair few of us are trying to shift the post Christmas weight or the weight gained during lockdown. I certainly am. Thought I would start a thread to give advice, progress and a bit of cheerleading. I appreciate there will inevitably be people who will lecture and say x diet is wrong and you need to do this instead, thats cool you are awesome and I will definitely do that. Personally I am looking at the least to lose 4-5 stone and I am broadly doing it via the diet that I have always done, and works for me and that is Slimming World. It allows me to eat food for weightloss and feel full at the end of a meal. Previously I lost 6 stone on this diet so I am comfortable with it. Today my first post Christmas weigh in was a 9lb loss. My plan is to get out for some form of exercise as that the area where I have failed since March.
  12. I want to bet a large sum, for me anyway. I want to bet about £300 on England u19 to beat Israel tomorrow. Now I haven't placed a bet for about 5 years, and have never placed a bet online, nor registered with any betting sites. I have found out there are offers for new customers. From free bets to bet a tenner and get 20 in free bets. It got me thinking. If I joined multiple sites my stake could go a lot higher using the free bets. I haven't worked out the full amount yet. There is one site offering to double your odds. So my thinking was use as many free bets as possible then plonk whats left of the 300 on that site. I have a few concerns. 1 Some of the odds are not in fractions, are they easy to work out? 2 Can I use the free bet on the same bet, Does my free £10 bet have to go on a horse race or something. 3 Is it easy to get your money back? 4 Are there any other things to consider. I know there are terms and conditions on every site. But I dont have time to read pages and pages over multiple sites. Any advice would be welcome

    Gardening

Calm down Morpheus, not that kind of gardening. Don't think there's a thread on here for gardening, so I'm starting one! Somewhere to throw ideas around, ask for advice, show off etc I'm not a keen gardener, but I need to take some interest as I have a large garden with potential, but it is currently useless as I don't do anything with it bar mowing the grass. So here's the advice I'm after. Half of my garden is grass, which is fine. I mow it. The other half (the bottom half) is overgrown at the moment with weeds, briars, long grass etc. What's the best plan of attack for this? My thoughts were to borrow a strimmer and get it all cut down, and then hire a rotavator and dig up the ground, then replant the grass (just basic grass seed) Will that work or will the weeds come back with the grass? Could go for turf but it's more expensive and I'm in no hurry so can afford to wait for the seed to grow. (I realise this is a really boring thread, but I need advice so worth a try! )
  14. I think I have a sleep disorder. For a few years now it's been a running joke with first my parents, now my missus that I'll wake up in the middle of the night totally disorientated and not making any sense. It hasn't really affected me so far because I rarely remember it. But the last 2 days have been much worse. Last night I woke up 5 times in the nights, twice waking myself up shouting. Tonight/Last night I woke up completely disorientated and I haven't been able to get back to sleep since. I did a bit of research tonight because I was a bit concerned and came across this. Confusional arousals A lot of it makes sense. It was something so mild and minor for so long then I scrolled to causes and bingo. Rotating shift work Night shift work Other sleep disorders (hypersomnia, insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorders) Not enough sleep Stress Worry Bipolar and depressive disorder I just finished my first set of night shifts ever last week. Totally messed with my sleeping pattern and I only felt normal yesterday. It can't be a coincidence. The thing that worries me is that they suggest seeing a sleep specialist but I can't imagine Poland being very progression when it comes to something like this and I'm really worried it'll affect my work. Is anyone else affected by any sleep disorders? Any advice?
  15. So.. what are your businesses doing - if anything - about their journey to net zero? 55% of companies state themselves, they are not transitioning fast enough.. Any obvious ideas we're not doing? Anything we're doing well? In my business we're trying to help clients get there, trying to get PSDS (Public Sector Decarb Scheme) applications in left, right and centre, but the funding has run out now.. Think we'll ever achieve it? Interested to know your thoughts!
  16. Sometimes I consider taking a year off the internet. I think I might really like it.
  17. Wasn't sure whether to put this in the What Car Do You Drive thread or start a new one so feel free to move if required. I changed a couple of bulbs the weekend on my 1 series BMW and ever since I've had this error showing up I changed the bulbs back just in case but the error remains. Anyone else had this issue?
  18. So after 18 years at y present company it looks like I have finally escaped...or very nearly anyway. I've never actually handed in my notice before and I'm not sure exactly when to do it. At present I've had the contract from the new company, I just need to sign it and return it, the only thing is that they haven't actually gave me a start date yet. The thing that is concerning me is that if I jump in and hand in my notice now then I don't want to end up jumping the gun and being without work for 3 or 4 weeks, on the flipside, I don't want to wait for the start date to come through only to find that I don't have enough time to work my notice period. My contract says that I have to give 12 weeks notice but I've been told that it is actually just 4 weeks that I need to give them. Do I do it now, Do I wait for the start date or can I just kind of provisionally tell them that I'm giving them my notice and we can work out the actual notice period at a later date? Also at what point is it acceptable to take a massive dump on my bosses desk?
  19. Couldn't find a topic relating to this, so hope this is the right place. My wife turns 40 next month, and I know she wants a pair of studded diamond earrings for "fancy". She's been dropping hints for a long time. However.... when it comes to Jewellery I'd normally head into Brum's famous Jewellery quarter, but due to Covid I don't really fancy going in. Does anyone know of and have used any quality and ethical online diamond retailers? I've never previously purchased something like this online. I don't mean to come across as a snob but I don't really like some of the high street retailers such as H Samuel etc, unless it's for something you'd wear day to day. I also think Tiffany's is overpriced for what it is, you're paying for a name. Got a budget of around £2k, so they're not going to be anything like a footballer might wear

    Families

As distinct from the Relationship Thread, which focuses on sexual/romantic partners, thought I'd start one on our other family relationships - parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunts and in-laws. How do you get on with yours? Love them or hate them? Or both? I'm convinced that a huge part of my personality (both good and bad) is due to being the only child of elderly parents. I'm consequently intrigued and baffled by siblings, and how they interact - my own two daughters are the best of friends, which is a huge relief, as some of my friends seemed to have quite bad relationships with their brothers and sisters. Basically, our family mostly seems to work pretty well, without too many problems, but I know this isn't the case for everyone. Fire away.
  21. Not sure where to put this so please admin move to the correct place if necessary. Had a letter from the above saying that I was illegally parked in one of the carparks blah blah and have fined me with all sorts of threats if I do not pay. The only time we can think of ever using this car park was a few weeks ago where we pulled onto it to pick up a takeaway curry. We did not even park and were gone inside two minutes. Do they have any legal powers to take things further. My mate reckons just ignore it and they can do nothing and it’s all hot air but. just wondered if anyone had any dealings with these people before. Thanks in advance

    Re-roofing

Anyone had their house re-roofed? I think ours needs doing. I've been googling costs to re-roof house and a 3 bed semi like ours seems to come out at £5-£6,000 which seems suspiciously cheap, I was thinking something like double that. Anyone know about scaffolding too? We've got a roofed over side passage down the side of the house that adjoins the neighbours roofed over side passage, and a single storey extension to the rear so for the life of me I can't see how they can get the scaffolding up. I can see that getting really expensive too.
  23. After some help please guys. My mom has just got a letter through from HMRC saying she's been fined £600. She's investigated and they've told her she owes tax from 2016 and 2017, £799 per year! They were sending letters to her old address hence why she hasn't known about it and has now been fined. She was working at the time so her tax was paid through PAYE but apparently her employer used the wrong code. Is there anything she can do about this? She's retired now so can't afford to pay out £2,200! I guess fair enough if she owes the tax she owes the tax, but it all seems a bit unfair that none of it was her fault and she not only has to pay it all back but has to pay £600 on top of it
  24. Hello, do any of you Villans know about washing machines? I just moved into a new flat near Swansea today and was gutted to find out that the washing machine is just for decoration. In other words it doesn't work. ☹ I'm so disappointed as it really was one of the main reasons to move here, to have a @×#$€*^ washing machine arrggghhhh! There's no water at all going into the detergent drawer or the drum. Is that more likely to be a fault with the washing machine or with the plumbing in the building as a whole? I'm hoping it's because it might be an old machine maybe, because the landlord is apparently a bit of a words removed and I have little faith in him sorting the problem out any time soon. He actually emailed me with a threat of eviction today just because my rent transfer didn’t show in his account within a few minutes. Wtf!? I'd only just moved in! Sorry for this boring thread but I'm stressed out and so sick of going to launderettes!!!
  25. I currently have a Discover credit card but have been thinking about switching to either a Barclay's one or American Express. Discover has really changed up their fees and such the last few months and I don't really like the direction they are going. I don't know how credit cards work in the UK but I assume they work similarly in a lot of ways. Are any on here proponents of having a credit card? If so, who do you go with? Also does anybody have a Barclay's or American Express? If so how do they like it?
