  1. Looking at our remaining fixtures I think we will peter out to about a 14th place finish with a points total in the low 40s.
  2. I dislike the formation but would make more sense with the players we currently have than what we are doing
  3. Actually it was a massive difference. The width was provided by one of the two front players going wide which meant that the full back could be more defensive, which in turn meant the number 8s could play through the middle without the worry of moving to the full back area. That's a major formation change not a 'tweak' Of course some of our players are not up to it but the 4321 system is also damaging us and Gerrard seems determined to play it. He needs to accept that he doesn't have the players, play a formation for which he does and then change in the summer once he has the players he wants. Currently he is destroying good will and damaging team moral by forcing a foot into a glove.
  4. He changed the system from 4321 to 4312. Gerrard asked the players to play quite differently to how he is now.
  5. We only have own one number 10, Buendia. If we are playing a system with two we need to buy another. None of our current midfielders suit Gerrard's preferred system. If we want to be successful and challenge for Europe using that system we will need to replace all three starters. Though this is probably better kept for the formation topic rather than the Gerrard one.
  6. I think that's the danger. If we are to stick with him then he needs six new first 11 players (one CB, three Midfielders, one number 10 and a striker) as well as a few squad additions (RB,LB and GK). If he gets all that to enable him to play how he wants to then you'd hope what would be an almost entire new team would be right behind him. Obviously bringing in so many new players has its own dangers.
  7. Whilst you certainly need all that, as you say, I think the players are confused and probably demotivated by the system Gerrard is imposing. Playing with the 8s dropping into full back roles, high full backs, no wingers and all forwards occupying a very small area of the top of the pitch has completely thrown them all off their game. I think the players are thinking, and worrying, way too much about their positions and not allowing their natural games to flow. To then have your manager come out and call you a bunch of losers who need replacing probably doesn't help with motivation and belief.
  8. Rice is every bit as important to West Ham as Grealish was to us. It's no coincidence that West Ham became very average whilst he was injured and are back on it now Rice has returned. I would love a player of his ability as our number 6, not sure if Phillips is that man though.
  9. Yes, it was never going to be easy replacing Smith. We went from having a captain, coming through the youth setup, brilliant footballer and manager with long fan based association, both of whom brought us success, to having neither within a few months of each other. I will admit I'm finding it very difficult to feel much connection to the club at the moment.
  10. Everybody wants investment in the squad the worry is that we are going to go large with an inexperienced manager playing a system that only he believes in. As Villa fans we all want to see us succeed. I live in hope that Gerrard will be a success but I don't believe he will be. That's not negativity, that's simply taking all the things we have seen so far into account. Gerrard was the wrong choice, too unknown, too inexperienced.
  11. I wonder if they'll be able to be TV pundits together or whether they'll just keep on interrupting each other and covering the same ground?
  12. I fear the summer recruitment. Not because I don't think we'll spend money, but because I think we'll spend a shed load trying to achieve a shape that'll never work.
  13. Unless, of course, the players all think the manager is a chancer. And they might be right.
  14. Yeah, I'd like to sign him but don't think it's imperative that we do
  15. The worry is I don't think Digne or Coutinho are consistently good enough either
  16. It was probably time for Smith to go but most would have hoped for an upgrade rather than a trainee as his replacement
  17. The worry is the ones that replace them
  18. Predictable loss. We don't win against decent teams anymore
  19. That isn't why you were ridiculed, it was because you somehow managed to mention it in every thread you posted in. Most would have happily had Tammy on the books.
  20. It's ok StevieG will have given them a good talking too and we will see a different side this half! He's a winner!
  21. In fairness, and this doesn't excuse his level of performance today, for Scotland he plays as a 10 and here he is being asked to play as a 6
  22. You don't think being wide open to counter attacks and offering nothing in front of goal has anything to do with how the manager has set us up? As soon as the line up and formation was announced this performance was a given.
  23. I'm not convinced Gerrard is a particularly good manager you know? A whiff of the Sherwoods comes off him
  24. The media have already decided his future. They will be gutted if he doesn't become manager of Liverpool so no matter how bad it gets under Gerrard here it won't stick to him.
