  1. Not sure Smith had anything to do with it.
  2. Right, Man United were linked with dropping £50m on him a few months back. It’s not crazy to think someone would pay big money for him and as you say if you offered every club one of the three of them for free they would take McNeil. Of course that’s not to say that’s always right because a year ago if you’d offered every club Ezri Konsa or Ben Mee I would say they would all take Mee and I wouldn’t swap them now.
  3. What about someone like Shaquiri for a bit of experience if we are looking at people on the fringes of the CL clubs?
  4. Messi vs Ronaldo the classic example. I think it’s modern society not just the media. You become a ‘fan’ of your own opinion on one player vs another and therefore stick to that point. Same has happened in politics. It’s a very weird trend that even happens with our own players and doesn’t even make sense because form moves around so much - an in-form Douglas Luis is better than Nakamba but an out-of-form DL isn’t - that’s an obvious point but instead of that it just becomes “this player is better, we should sell this player.” Foden is a magical player. So is Grealish. We are lucky to have one of them.
  5. It’s the two of them and then the guy who I think is probably going to be first choice. Think the Luton chap is third choice. Kalinic seems to have played regularly for Hajduk Split since going there and they ended the season unbeaten in quite a few so hopefully he has form and confidence back and either comes back as a solid understudy or earns himself a move. If nothing else I’m guessing they’ll take him back on loan again.
  6. I think it’s a good sign the media think we could sign him. Regardless of whether it’s true or not or a good idea or not, the fact is Burnley have been a better team than us for 5-6 years so it’s a nice sign of the turnaround that the media is now speculating we could go after their star players.
  7. Unless Hajduk Split have another Lovre Kalinic as a goalkeeper (which wouldn’t actually surprise me! Could be a very common name in Croatia for all I know!) he’s in the squad. Likely second choice.
  8. Do you know, you posting this made me realise I feel like this about most of our players in a really good way - I think we could lose anyone (except Jack and Emi) and I wouldn’t be worried about a major effect on us, but that’s because I trust the system for the first time I can remember.
  9. Really pleased for them. I need a new Championship team to look out for now (I won’t say ‘support’, Villa is enough heartache for me).
  10. Just realised Kalinic in the Croatia squad is of course still on our books as well.
  11. This is a weird one for me. I was thinking the other day what a fall from grace he has had. I can’t disagree with anything you say above but would probably have made a similar argument about Lingard who went and bossed it at West Ham. With RLC I am never sure what sort of player he’s meant to be, so would probably prefer to give our kids a chance.
  12. Agreed and he has gone on to have a decent career at a slightly lower level - kind of where I expect Davis to end up, scoring 1 in every 3 or 4 for someone like Bristol and making a couple of million quid doing so.
  13. Ha not so much - i.e. I’m not a Davis fan in the sense of thinking he is ever going to score a load of goals for us, but also I’m annoyed when people dismiss his chances of having a good career because he hasn’t yet, if that makes sense? Realistically I think he’ll end up having a decent Championship career. But people writing off 21/22/23 year olds as a rule is nuts.
  14. Christ I loved both those goals. Delaney to Dublin to Wright is my crack. And the flick up for the Boro goal... wow.
  15. Same as the people who write off 23-year-old physical strikers at an age when Didier Drogba was in the French second tier.
  16. Don’t think I agree. A precociously talented 21 year old won’t have the same stats over a season but over 3-6 games in a tournament you can make a clear case to have them in for those moments of magic. Same as I might have had Grealish in age 21 (when he was largely an inconsistent sub) rather than Lallana because his ceiling and potential gamechanging moments were higher. Sorry for not explaining in more depth.
  17. I said that last summer and thought it might be best for everyone. But we are in a much better place now and I’m not sure I see anyone dropping £100m on him in this climate.
  18. I think Messi would drop out of games in that WBA team though. Pereira would be really good for us - but to be clear I think Traore is also really good and think any of Buendia/Pereira/McNeil are in that bracket (not as good as the likes of Grealish, better than the likes of AEG and Trez).
  19. Agreed. Really smart that we got him in early.
  20. This is almost the opposite of my view which is: Pereira is the best of them now with guaranteed goals, Buendia has the highest ceiling but I have a nagging doubt he will reach it for some reason, McNeil is a proven PL player and will always perform at a high level but will never be a Grealish which Buendia might (might!) be. Three very good players anyway.
  21. I don’t think that’s a harsh thing to say either. He started at the bottom and has done his time in League 1 and 2. His natural level is as a good Championship player and the fact he has achieved beyond that by playing and scoring in the PL, playing in multiple playoff finals, playing in the League Cup final, winning a couple of dozen international caps etc is credit to him and a sign he’s making the most of his career. If Swansea don’t turn this round I would imagine another loan is on the cards next season.
  22. Funny that 8 years after this thread was started I think people still debate the title. Like Zlatan he is one of those players who clearly has amazing talent but who there is a real split amongst fans on just how good they are - partly because they’ve basically ‘always had it easy’ being in the best team in their league.
  23. But Foden is 21. Just. When Jack was his age he was making the odd appearance in our relegation season. Both are sensational players is the short answer though.
