    And then classic Stones he almost cost us the win by letting Muller cruise through toward goal… thank heavens that wasn’t the Muller of a few years ago or the ball would have been the other side of the post! I largely agree with you though.

    As I’ve said a number of times, Southgate HAD a personal vendetta (well, that’s a strong word, he thought Jack was a prick but I think lots of people are pricks and I don’t have vendettas against them) - but I think we are past that now. In fact I’d go as far as to say part of the thinking is he’s perhaps not starting him because he doesn’t think he can last 120 mins and if a game goes to extra time he wants big-game players on. And I agree with that because Jack’s exactly who you want on the ball in the 89th or 119th minute. But then I’d still start him every time.

    Three hours before the last game the leaked line up said he wasn’t playing, two hours before it said he was. Pinch of salt until we see the actual lineup.

    Nationality and identity are tough things in this day and age. I wouldn’t expect any 16 year old from a multinational family or one with a history of migration to know exactly how they would see themselves 5 or 10 years later.

    Barnett is doing exactly what he should for Jack in trying to make money for him. Jack gets 90% of it. If you want him to stay at Villa for life, you absolutely want his agent to capitalise on every opportunity to make up the balance on the tens of millions a transfer would make him.

    Wouldn’t ever say I support another club or another player but I would still want the best for him, same as I have enjoyed James Milner having a good career. FWIW I agree with you he’ll stay but if Jack’s Villa story is he got us promoted, got us to two cup finals and two play-off finals, kept us up, helped establish us back in midtable and then earns us a record fee then he’ll have done a decent job and I’ll hope he continues to thrive while still mostly hating every other club.

    Off topic and this is about 99% of players not just Mings or Maguire but I’ll never understand how when a player’s only job is playing football they don’t spend the time working nonstop to be two-footed from the moment they sign with a club as a teenager. It can be learned!

    I agree with your conclusion but not your working… I think he DOES love Villa like we do but that also, yes, it’s a job - and I don’t choose to do my job at Villa (I couldn’t be a player sadly but there are accountants at Villa, lawyers, staff, etc etc - any of us could be applying for jobs there if we wanted). He will always be a fan but his career choice might still be to do something else. I think he’s staying though unless City offer something ridiculous. And let’s not forget what is being talked about is already a British record so they might do that I guess.

    Paul Doyle’s line from the club is that Villa will stand firm and plan to keep him - @Kiwivillan mate let’s hope on our back and forth about JWP that on this piece at least Doyle is on the money!

    Clearly I don’t want Jack to go and I think even £100M is low but I’m honestly a bit pleased that at least people are finally realising it would take a British record transfer fee to get him instead of tossing around numbers like £60M. Anyway still hope there’s nothing in it beyond City want him and we say no… but at some point now or in 5 years he will leave (or eventually retire!) so the club just need to keep building and making us less reliant on him for when that does happen

    Not intended as a cheap shot and sorry if it came over as such - you said he’d slunk off into the shadows as if he has just popped up with a made-up story rather than being someone who regularly writes quality content on the club - probably in fact the best Villa writer at any mainstream papers. Won’t come back on this again as I have said a few times even if he turns out to have got this dead wrong I think you’re being unfair to him to suggest he would just make it up. Not his style - as evidenced by the very lack of transfer rumours you cite. Anyway again no cheap shot intended.

    Paul Doyle took the time this week (amongst a whole bunch of Euro 2020 match reports) to write a really lovely reflective piece on Dalian Atkinson after the cop who killed him was convicted. Whether he got this rumour right or wrong I think you’re going a bit overboard here in this.

    Just watching England and he’s the best player and all my non-Villa mates are texting me saying how amazing he is, then I come on here and people aren’t impressed. We have such high standards for him.
