The point is exactly that if he WASN’T aware of anything specific he shouldn’t just chat nonsense about professionals. But then without nonsense Keane has nothing to say. It was literally on camera Southgate pointing to every player telling them their order. Keane wouldn’t need briefing if he was smart enough to look at his little TV monitor for that, or listen to any interview from the manager or any player afterwards. Southgate is everywhere saying he personally chose the order based on penalty performance in training, hence bringing on Rashford and Sancho. He said Saka was one of the top takers in training so he wanted to use him. There was no stepping up allowed. Keane is a bitter old man talking nonsense. I’m all for debate but if the last month has made anything clear it’s that Southgate has no interest in giving Grealish responsibility however much Grealish asks for it… so I’ll probably believe what all involved in the team and management are saying rather than an argumentative old tv pundit.

Clearly there is something wrong with Roy Keane, but we have all known that for decades.

He said it’s based on how well they have been taking them in training but that just doesn’t replicate the pressure, which is where being 19 or being fresh onto the pitch would actually count. Bizarre decision.

I love Martinez and I agree with you he’d be a great captain (not least as he will pretty much guaranteed play every game for the next few years) but if Jack leaves (which he won’t) I think Mings would get the armband without a second thought.

This would be such a great signing and someone who could be eased into the team and be a real star in a couple of years. Obviously between September and Christmas when he’s mostly coming in as a sub to get used to the league this thread will be a nightmare and by June he’ll have been written off but second season I would think he’ll be fantastic

Right… if England win I’ll be delighted. If they win playing good football I’ll be thrilled. If they lose I’ll be vaguely annoyed but only because I’m watching with some Italian mates. Southgate’s explanation that he expected Denmark to throw on another striker and go four up front just suggests to me he made the decision before Denmark had to take the injured lad off and go down to 10 men. By the time they all came back on the field the decision was done. I think if that hadn’t happened we still would have won but the last 15 wouldn’t have been the training exercise it was with Denmark a player down.
