Andrews actually got Man of Match by most of media over here. He is actually better footballer out of him and Whelan

Thought Whelan was the dead ball specialist?

What a contest that is

Indeed. Unfortunately for us at the moment, far and away the worst area of our squad is right in the heart of the pitch. Whereas the rest of them might be comparable to a fairly decent BMW, it is currently being powered by a Honda 50.

You'd be better off with Ciaran Clark and Stephen Ireland in midfield than Whelan and Andrews.

Absolutely we would be Brumerican. Trap is similar to MON in that he picks an 11 and they will play come hell or high water. You can get away with that in the international game because the games are few and far between so the players don't burn out, but it doesn't lend itself to incorporating new talent into the side.

Stephen Ireland; as you know; is not quite as straight forward an issue as that but Trap also suffers from having a lack of olive branches at his disposal. He has gotten us this far though, so we can't really complain. His pros outweigh his cons. It's just annoying when he can't or won't see those cons for himself.

Other than McClean, I don't see an outstanding prospect coming through. Maybe the likes of Pilkington and Clark will excel but I don't see too many Keane, Dunne, Duff, Given replacements. I think times might be a bit lean for a while unless a few come out of nowhere.

With some of the players coming through, we could have a fairly promising team for the World Cup qualifiers (if they get a chance).

Apart from Clark and Mclean which young players are good. I have a look at ROI world cup group and Germany and Sweden are in it. I think Given, Keane and Duff will retire after the Euros as they are 36, 32 and 33. Dunne is 32 and now past it, but I think he will carry on. Either way these are good players and I dont think the men coming through are as good.

Yeah actually that's one positive. The next generation of centre mids seem a bit better than the current crop (not hard). Even though we're losing some of the stars from other positions.

we are battling sweden for 2nd place and they will have same issue as us with Mellberg retiring at end of euros probably same for Svensson, Wilhelmsson and probably Kallstrom and Zlatan who has retired before

To me it seems many young Irish talents are either trapped into the English league because of the low standard in the national league, or unwilling to go to leagues like the Dutch. I´m sure that would be a better place for development than English 1st Div.

Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic. It will take time but I reckon we'd have a pretty good team with some of the following starting;

McClean

McCarthy

Clark

Coleman

Westwood

All these players look comfortable on the ball, which is something missing from the current team.

Predictions for tonight Spain 2-1 Ireland, although I hope I am wrong

And Croatia 1 - 2 Italy

The two big teams to eventually go through. ROI need to start with Long upfront with Keane, I dont think Doyle is good enough.
