Obviously we’ve invested a lot of money in the academy the last few years. Now we didn’t get promoted last yr, and we’ve started poorly, even losing to Albion after taking all their players. Is there a reason we don’t achieve at this level? Are we younger than others? Coached poorly? Just interested in what people think.

I think its a mix of many things. Firstly our best u21s are out on loan getting the experience they need. Secondly we play alot of 16 and 17 year olds at times at u21 level. And i think that at this age even one season brings players on massively. Then its new players getting used to new coaches etc etc.

Our academy intake this year is of an incredibly high standard so i can see many more of them playing u21 earlier than normal. We do treat this competition as a development situ for players rather than trying to win the thing. Which ultimately benefits rhe first team or our coffers .

Thankfully, after 2 tricky opening ties to start the season off, we have an easier one coming up on Friday. Away to Man City at 6pm.

All fixtures and details now included in OP. Potential issue around trips to Swansea & Crawley being on consecutive days (13/11 & 14/11). We'll see how it plays out.

Crawley fixture has been brought forward a week.

Dominic Ballard also got a hattrick in Southampton's previous game. A 5-3 defeat to Newcastle.

Why can’t we watch this on Villa tv? Man City are showing it on their channel. I thought we got the academy matches as part of the membership.

Only home games.

Tommi O'Reilly restores our two goal advantage, 3-1 as it stands

Just looked at the table. Man City lost their first 2 as well. Thought they would be really strong at this level .

They might be playing a really young team, or they might be like us and most of their better players are in the U18s or out on loan.

They've made it 2-3 now

Yep. Just popped over to their forum. Mostly u18s playing

To be fair we're playing three U18s and one of them is sixteen, and technically Smith and Feeney are still young enough to play for the U18s at least in the League, different rules for Youth Cup. The others are players that will probably eventually be released
