The Chairman Mao resembling, Monarchy hating, threat to Britain, Labour Party thread

If true, this is pretty uninspiring

Very depressing time to be left-wing and English just now. That's before you cop the self-confident selfies of Street with that prick Andrew Mitchell. I must admit I feel utterly hopeless and homeless when it comes to politics currently, and can only imagine how many others feel the same

This guy's a journalist for Politico, dunno how reliable he is, but sounds like Labour in for a brutal few hours and days if he's in the ballpark:

That would be a disaster for labour.

Could it be Labour are finished as a political force ? It was not even close,  the people who used to vote for them are either dead or are now Tories,  could it be as simple as that ?

They are never going to get a red wall back in this generation.  An opposition should win by-elections at ease historically also.

This result cannot be blamed on anythng but themselves surely ?

I was going to write a long piece about why it's all happened but it's simply down to the internet age demands populism to win.

If one side has the blue populism flag, you have to take the red populism flag.

I don't think either of those things are anything to do with it.

Blimey!  I’m sure they are a huge, huge factor.

For every person who votes Tory because they're happy about the vaccine rollout, surely there's someone else unhappy about the 150,000 deaths compared to Norway, New Zealand, Australia? Why is it only a vaccine bounce and not an excess death drop? How about the loss for the Tories from those self employed who couldn't be furloughed? All of the stuff ups that the Tories did over the pandemic? Have people just forgotten all of that now that the vaccine rollout is going well?

Brexit is done. Why would anyone vote for party based on it when it's now gone? And what about the 50% (30% in Hartlepool) of people who are remainers and would be seething at the brexit stuff ups? Even the leavers seeing all of the problems caused should be unhappy about it.

I honestly think it's too easy to look at surface issues as a simple explanation. I think the reality is far more complex and is mainly around the 70 year decline of Labour within the working class, arrested in 1997 and 2017 by populism, inspiration and aspiration.

Im not sure i would agree with that pete. It might have had a part but that town has never had a tory in charge

I dont know what hartlepools councils are like so i cant judge their performance, but wasn't even close. The Tories wiped the floor with them. There is more to it than just people being stupid, or Brexit or vaccines. My belief its protest votes out of what the labour party has become.

Look at how many scandals boris has been under yet people stilm vote them ahead of labour

Well Mandelson has just been on R4 explaining the defeat was wholly a hang over from Corbynism.

They're just going to delude themselves they haven't gone far enough to the right and dip below 20% in 2024.

Johnson will probably call a GE next year just to take the piss.

That was the crux of the message, yes.

Labour shouldn’t be living in the past. If you want to get elected, drop this labour bullshit and get behind Blair.

I think part of their problem is I couldn't tell you what their policies or strategy is right now on any issue that "matter" to the majority of people. If they focused all of their energy on plans to increase the numbers of better paying jobs, helping people to buy homes and getting better public services then they might be able to cut through a bit. They would probably say they're doing all of those things but I honestly couldn't tell you what their policies are or how they're planning to achieve them.

There's also a definite feeling (among some) of them being too "woke" and that they don't "believe" in Britain.

Twitter has come up with the conclusion that Hartlepool voted for the right wing because Labour weren’t socialist enough.

I agree

He can only fight what is in front of him to be fair to Boris.

I suspect the Tories could win the next GE without campaigning at all.
