Map of US State Capitals (black) vs geographic (green), and population (red) centers

Note: Some states have pretty inaccurate geographic centers (Most notable Minnesota and Maryland).  Everything else seems more or less correct.

I always presume that any map that has substantial straight lines is telling me there was nothing there worth fighting over.

That's not meant as an inflammatory statement, it just suggests there is no actual difference either side of that notional border. Good examples,Wyoming / Colorado / Utah and the excellent Mauritania / Mali / Algeria.

I remember asking a similar question at school in geography regarding the Egyptian border. The teacher said it was drawn by the powers that be at the time using a ruler on the map and would not have been familiar with the local features so simply drew a line. May have been similar in the US?

The only US State without a perfectly straight line in its boundary is Hawaii.

South Carolina might have something to say about this. (Or maybe I'm wrong)

South Carolina says you are, but thanks anyway.
