Phumfeinz
Phumf, no offence but I don't think I've ever seen you post anything positive in the 6 years I've been here. You have an awesome avatar though I'm a pessimist. That way, I can't be disappointed!
islingtonclaret
Really been looking at no man's sky and checking out some of his interviews. It really gives me a vibe off someone that is trying to oversell their game by outrageous claims that doesn't really work in practice. Still, it looks interesting but there is definitely a catch there that we haven't seen yet. Few things It sort of has a rogue feel to it, meaning that you can die at any time and lose everything you have built up, like your ship and what not. Not sure if it goes for currency but it might. They also talked about you finding trade routes, space stations and such. How does that even work? Would imagine that it's kind of limited since it revolves around perma death. He also stressed the fact that there are no quests or certain objectives you have to do. And how complex are their algorithims that determines the outcome of planets and creatures. Like, everything is supposedly procedural. He also mentioned several times that it's not supposed to be a "tech" demo in the sense that walking around exploring is what it really boils down to. But what do you gain from harvesting certain things if you cannot build(neither denied or confirmed but I doubt it considering the vast number of planets) Lot of questions and it feels like he is trying to oversell the game but in reality it's a far cry from what people imagine it being. Still, hope it delivers on many things as the art style looks fantastic. A real fantasy for many people. Then again, there are other space games coming out so it's not doom or gloom for a consumer standpoint *cough cough* Peter Molyneux says Hi. I looked up all the vids on No Man's Sky yesterday. I, like most, was blown away by the prospect of what I saw. The potential is phenomenal. The explanation of the algorithms used and how it works blew my socks off. The only thing I worry about is the content. Exploration in these massive generated is fine, I've not much doubt that it will be spellbinding. But something else has to draw you in - character interactions and some form of plot involvement. Procedurally, they aren't going to be able to create infinitely unique NPCs with different voices and personalities etc unless a team of ten men can achieve the practically unthinkable. The_Rev
I'm sure a lot of the love for No Man's Sky is from people who are hoping it turns out to be a modern version of Elite.

islingtonclaret
I'm sure a lot of the love for No Man's Sky is from people who are hoping it turns out to be a modern version of Elite. I think the Elite guys plus the No Man's Sky development teams are very, very aware of each other. No Man's Sky has the ball in it's court to do something different though. The Elite guys are making a stomping game, but they've done it before and they know what gameplay mechanics they're using because they're much the same as the original. No Man's Sky have already stated that Elite is a massive influence. They've got to deliver something that won't be simply labelled 'an Elite clone'. To be fair, I'm probably going to buy both. I looked at the development progression of Elite: Dangerous last night and I like what I see.

I will rightly say this with much embarrassment, but I've never played it. To add salt to my own wounds, I might as well admit that I was a big starflight fan yet never played star control 1 or
islingtonclaret
Edit, clearly getting star citizen mixed up with something else from the early 90s considering it hasn't been released yet!
hogso
Yeah, Star Citizen is by the guy who did Wing Commander, and is 'the game he always wanted to make' - much like Frontier and Elite Dangerous. It seems the tech and crowd funding has caused something of a watershed moment for the space sim genre.

I've got to say I watched an intro and a half hour bit of gameplay of an experienced EVE online player and it looked like watching paint dry
