  1. Because these things have an awful propensity to spread.
  2. The only time the Palestinian cause has advanced one inch, it’s been the result of negotiations. Israel will never respond positively to acts of terrorism. They would regard it as rewarding those acts. The problem at the moment, is Israel has a reactionary government that is led by a crook , who’s toehold on power is facilitated by the more extreme elements in Israeli society. The problem on the Palestinian side, is a murderous terrorist group has taken control in Gaza. Until more reasonable people start talking again, this situation will continue. There are better people on both sides, but I think a lot more people are going to die before their voices are heard again.
  3. Israel wouldn’t be in Gaza now if the events of October 7th hadn’t happened.
  4. Disingenuous. The current situation in Gaza, was very much triggered by the events of October the 7th.
  5. Wonder why they waited till October the 7th then. Did something happen that day.
  6. I don’t see Israel exporting terrorism around the globe.
  7. Aren’t they second in the Eredivisie. They won’t be a pushover.
  8. If Dendoncker and Chambers play, I’ll be seriously worried.
  9. Like I said, there are no clean wars, only wars that inflict immense suffering on innocents. This is not Genocide. Barbarrosa, the Holocaust, Cambodia, Armenia, Rwanda, was Genocide. This doesn’t even come close to those.
  10. Trying to pigeonhole entire communities into one type, is a mistake. I’ve no doubt it does take a fairly strong person to live that close to people, who have amongst them an element who would happily cut your throat. And I have immense respect for anyone who knowing that, can still harbour goodwill to them. On the other hand, I saw a clip yesterday of a West Bank settler walk up to a Palestinian , and simply shoot him, all while an Israeli soldier watched on. Total opposites. One can only hope that the more enlightened elements from both communities will eventually prevail. We seem an awfully long way from that though.
  11. We’ll have to disagree on that then. To me it’s war. In the worst possible environment, a heavily built up populated city. If that rather narrow UN definition stands. Then every war in history was Genocide. Can you give me an example of a war where large numbers of innocents didn’t die. It’s war, there is no clean version of it.
  12. It’s not Genocide. If it were. No one would be walking out of Gaza City. It’s war, war is cruel, war is horrible, war is the ultimate example of human failure. Every war in history has resulted in mass casualties of innocent people. From carpet bombing German cities, to dropping agent orange in Vietnam. By its very nature innocents die. This is just another example of how dreadful war can be. But, there are no death camps here, no gas chambers,no organised campaign to exterminate an entire race. There’s war, just bloody war.
  13. Only one side has the capacity to do it, true. But only Hamas and Hezbolah actually have it as a stated aim.
  14. Personally, I think it’s more fear, that causes people to react violently. Until that fear of each other is removed, it’s difficult to see any way forward.
  15. Have to say, the interviews and thoughts of the leaders of both Hamas and Hezbolah, don’t fill me with optimism when it comes to the possibility of a negotiated solution. The Palestinian authority on the West Bank seem to be more reasonable, in that they don’t seem to want to kill every Jew in the region. I don’t envy anybody who has to bring those three together.
  16. No. What possible reason would Israel have had to attack Egypt. Other than to prevent an unprovoked attack on them. Don’t know if you were alive then, I was, the Arab nations were constantly manoeuvring to attack Israel. They lived their lives surrounded by people who wanted them erased.
  17. Semantics. When massive forces are gathering on your borders readying for an invasion, then it’s probably a smart move to stop them.
  18. It’s dog whistle politics. They know they’re F****d at the next election. Now they’re just trying to shore up their hard right base.
  19. Unfortunately there are a large number of the membership of the Tory Party who think along the same lines as her. It’s the leadership of that party, that she’s after. Remembering that it’s that membership, that thought Truss would make a good PM, she might be on a winner. Teresa May claimed a few years ago, that people considered the Tories to be the nasty party. Looks increasingly like those people were right.
  20. Think I’ll bow out of this thread. Opinions are pretty entrenched, and life’s too short.
  21. Your last bit is hard to argue. Both the Ottomans and latterly the British would hardly have allowed that to happen.
