Re Wilder and Sheffield United occasionally you get anomalies teams that come up and exceed all expectations, the proof of the pudding will be the following 2 seasons. Re Smith, can someone point out who we should have bought in each position, while still providing enough depth in the squad.

Keith Leonard being one that i think could of made a big impact, but for the Villa curse of the late 70s with career ending injuries. Sorry for being of topic but remember him playing for highgate utd versus Paget rangers around 1972.

Think it was Shankly who said "a football team is like a piano, you need 8 to carry it and 3 to play the damn thing" well we have lost two of those that can play the damn thing in Grealish and Axel, and i would say that out of the other 8 there's only 4 man enough to do it. Smith needs at least until Christmas before serious assessment

Old deadly was certainly calling for his head, having said that i was replying to the original post that 1 win in 9 was laughable, and stating that such runs can happen to the best of managers. Think Smith needs until this time next season to start to be judged fairly, would be unfair to use such hyperbole after only what is relatively a hand full of matches.

Just reading, "Odd man out" about Sir Ron, as someone who was at nearly all of those matches that are mentioned, you seem to forget how inconsistent his teams were in the late 70s. As a manger that would certainly " whip them into shape" i don't think it is as easily as said than done. Great read btw.

So the great Ron Saunders had a run of 2 wins in 11 matches, scoring only 10 goals, In 77/78 season, no one was laughing 3 years later.
