The prospect of signing Cantwell doesn’t excite me in the way that other players we’ve been linked with or already signed does. But when you look at how players like Konsa, Mings and Targett have progressed under the current regime, I’d put faith in the management to know what they’re doing, and to further develop him as a player. I don’t like his hair though.

Why would you not give the captaincy to our vice-captain who deputised for nearly a third of last season? He’s a communicator and leader on the pitch. He’s a model professional. He’s exactly what you want in a captain.

I always said to mates who support other teams that Grealish is one of those players, who, if he plays for your team, you love him, but if he played for someone else, you would think he was an absolute word removed. I was right.

Absolutely this. If he leaves now (and it looks like he will), when we are finally, unequivocally, on an upwards trajectory, and pushing on to that next level, I’ll be pissed off. I won’t boo or abuse him but on his return to Villa Park he’ll get the same level as attention from me as the likes of Ashley Westwood or Jordan Ayew, i.e. absolutely **** all. But either way, the future is bright, and massively looking forward to the new season with or without him.

To be fair I think that was a bit of heat of the moment rage, much like how we’re venting off at Man City at the moment. I had a look at their Big Pink One a few days later and it had all calmed down a bit (no I’m not a doctor).
