  1. And as a result that would make it less appealing for those players getting a salary bump to leave the club permanently. I don’t know how many players would have a clause like that in their contract, but it would cause us a problem if it applies to someone we’re looking to move on. Only Olsen is out of contract in the summer.
  2. Let's be honest here, we have spent a huge amount of money continuously since NSWE arrived. That is nothing new and the spending has taken us from mid-table Championship to 4th in the Premier League and the knockout stages of European competition. If we have to scale back on transfers now and sell a key player ahead of the summer, it is clearly still worth it.
  3. I like him in the second striker role, or late on in a game in attacking midfield so we can use his ability on the counter attack. Defensively he caused a problem for us on the left side, didn't track the wing back well enough and gave away needless free kicks in dangerous areas. Obviously he needs regular minutes to develop but I hope Ramsey isn't injured because it is a significant drop in quality as it stands. If Ramsey is injured I would be tempted to pick Tielemans on the left and Diaby up top for the bigger games.
  4. Just to be clear, Hause can't play for our first team this season. Not registered for the league or Europe. No longer an option. He has 1 year left on his contract, I don't see him getting anywhere near the same salary at his next club. So it will either be an early pay off like Traore, or a loan deal to try to rebuild his reputation ahead of a free transfer in 2025.
  5. If they want to argue we should have signed Kellyman earlier then fair enough, but if you’re talking about the UEFA paperwork being messed up or some sort of oversight, that’s simply not correct. The rules for the qualifiers were not the same as the rules for the main competition. For the group stage we had to submit a List A senior squad and a List B academy squad. Kellyman hadn’t been at the club long enough to qualify for List B and we would have needed to drop a senior player from the squad to make room for him on List A. It was the same for Iroegbunam.
  6. Lenglet and Zaniolo were cover for Mings and Buendia. They won't be replaced.
  7. Yeah...I'm not going to question that they know what's best for the development of each individual player, but I expected a slightly stronger line up. Proctor Wilson and Brannigan on the bench was a surprise. When you add in Kellyman Young Patterson Broggio Jimoh Borland Katsukunya Pavey - that's an awful lot of our better and experienced players not in the side. Excited to see what some of them can do for the rest of the season stepping up a level to the U21s regularly.
  8. Got 8 right! Thought we'd save Jimoh and Borland for Palace today, as we did with Rowe and a few others. Wright clearly on the bench for Sheffield United following Zaniolo's injury. Afoka not involved at all, maybe injured or we're just prioritising other players development at this stage. Here's a rogue prediction for you. Bogarde to join Deano on loan at Charlotte FC. He's miles away from first team minutes and needs to be playing at a higher level than U21 to kick on. Didn't get the Championship move we were hoping for on deadline day so there are few remaining options this season.
  9. Cash, Duran, JJ, Luiz, Kamara, Bailey. I'm pretty confident Cash will go. I don't think he fits the way Emery wants to play and as a club we're now stretching beyond his level. Konsa would be playing right back if our central defence was more stable (Pau out, Carlos and Lenglet in poor form). Duran I think us more likely to be loaned out and we bring in a more experienced striker on loan in the meantime, but may go if Chelsea etc still want him and we could make a decent profit. We won't want to sell JJ Luiz or Kamara but one of them may be our big exit to fund our other business. Can't see us selling Bailey or Bailey wanting to leave us, as good as he is right now he's not been consistent enough over his time at Villa to warrant a bigger move.
  10. Wright Ealing Rowe Katsukunya Munroe Bogarde Alcock Pierre Afoka Kellyman Moore
  11. Obviously one we would have wanted to shift, but joining on a free and slightly lower wages mean Chambers isn't costing us nearly as much as Traore was per season. He won't be registered for Europe but will make the bench in the league and cup games when we have a few out (like now). Bombing him out wouldn't do us any good when there aren't many young prospects knocking on the door in his position. Kesler-Hayden will be there but beyond that, Nedeljkovic Feeney and Smith are on loan, Swinkels is injured long term, Bogarde has moved up to midfield.
  12. If you look at what Traore cost us in amortisation and wages, plus Dendoncker's wages, I think January overall has seen us marginally reduce our spend for the rest of the season rather than increase it.
  13. So Tommi O'Reilly and Josh Feeney have got their loan moves. Late loan for Lamare Bogarde? If not, interesting situation for him. Recalled from Bristol Rovers. Seemed to have Championship suitors. Wasn't in the youth squads for the last round of fixtures. Is he injured? Will Emery be taking a look at him in training for the rest of the season? Afoka also recalled, hasn't got a move back out yet. With Gauci signing and Proctor stepping up to the U21s, I did wonder if Wright would get a loan too. We'll see in the next couple of hours I guess...
  14. Finished 5-3. Spurs have won every game at this level. We had 5 U18s stepping up. The stats suggest a respectable performance where we held our own, aside from 18 minutes where they blew us away scoring 4.
  15. For a variety of reasons, no Proctor Rowe Katsukunya Borland Jimoh Patterson Young Broggio Wilson Kellyman Brannigan Edwards for the U18s today. Still a poor result given the depth of talent we have at that level, but not a massive surprise.
  16. I can see Wright going out on loan if we sign another keeper (an area we must be looking at with our pursuit of Valdimarsson) or recall Sinisalo/Zych (unlikely). If not, I can't. Surely too much of a risk leaving 17 year old Proctor as third choice. Not even sure that Olsen is back from injury yet.
  17. This one makes a lot of sense to me. From the quick highlights and comments I've seen, Nedelković seems to have a lot of potential attributes that we need for the right back role in Emery's system. Big physical player. Pace. Strong defensively. Confident passing in confined spaces near the touchline. Able to get forward when needed and put in a decent cross. Everything we're asking Konsa to do from right back at the moment and he's improving, but isn't particularly natural at some of it. Obviously not ready for Premier League football but if we can make it work financially, he's likely to rise in value and could be sold for profit, or excel for us one day. I don't think this signing would spell the end for Kesler-Hayden, but he has his work cut out because he is a very attacking option that doesn't fit the profile Emery seems to favour at right back. He hasn't developed the defensive side of his game enough on loan so far. Interested to see what the rest of the season brings for him. There's a Plymouth paper claiming he's not going anywhere else, he's staying at Villa, which Plymouth fans don't believe because they don't think he's much of a loss for them, let alone good enough for us.
  18. Interesting that Chambers wasn't in the squad for Boro and we only had 8 on the bench. Could be injured or ill, but heard nothing about that yet. Iroegbunam was on the bench but didn't make the pitch, so I believe that means he's not cup tied either for a potential loan spell, with most Championship sides still in the competition. Those seem most likely players to leave this month (I reckon Traore will go in the summer when he's out of contract/back from AFCON/hopefully not as injured).
  19. Like watching paint dry. Without Luiz Tielemans Pau Carlos Buendia we don’t have enough good technical passers in the team to break down deep defences. We take too many touches and it’s too easy for them to stay in shape. Having both Kamara and Dendoncker isn’t working, which is no great surprise. Cash still looks like a fish out of water in this role.
  20. We are at the maximum number of players we can register for the UEFA List A Squad (1/4 club trained players, 4/4 association trained players, 17/17 senior players. We don't have any more club trained players available, so current maximum = 22). The only way Tim gets into the squad for the second half of the season is if we remove a senior player without replacing them. Bertrand Traore is the only player that might fit this profile, because he has hardly featured and has a few players ahead of him for his favoured position. Any other senior player in the squad that leaves in January would require a direct replacement. If Tim stays at Villa for the rest of this season rather than going out on loan in January, he would become a "club trained player" from next season onwards, so we would be able to register him as an extra player for Europe without removing anyone. But they might decide a loan is better for his development.
  21. He's on our UEFA "List B" - which allows us to register unlimited club trained players under 21. Same goes for Marschall. They count as club trained, unlike Iroegbunam and Kellyman at this stage because they haven't been registered to Villa for long enough. https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaconferenceleague/clubs/52683--aston-villa/squad/
  22. I don't think we've been good in any of the past 3 games against Spurs Legia Bournemouth, but we've got 7 points from 9. That's the big positive for me. We knew our lack of depth would come into the equation when fixtures pile up and it was plain to see today. Zaniolo is too expensive to be such a project, utterly pathetic in all departments. With Kamara out, Dendoncker and Iroegbunam are the profile of player we needed in midfield but for different reasons, Emery clearly doesn't trust either of them. He went with Luiz Tielemans and they were predictably overpowered. Cash has no competition for right back, showed us up today as the Konsa-Carlos axis was exploited time and again. Duran is so raw that he should only really be thrown on for a bit of chaos roulette when we're desperate (stupid card or great goal? what will it be!) We are a good side with a great manager, but a collective lack of physicality, pace and intensity are our biggest weakness. I was surprised we went for Pau and Tielemans in the summer with that in mind. Obviously they have their upsides in other areas. Diaby and Zaniolo (at the time) made more sense to me because of the electric pace and Zaniolo's stature. But neither of them were in areas of the pitch you constantly compete for 50-50s and headers. I still believe we are 3-4 players short of a squad capable of competing for Champions League spots. Back up keeper that isn't scared of a short pass. Right back. Big athletic midfielder. Striker. That is not a bad reflection at all on the job we've done so far under Emery and Monchi, we just have a bit further to go. 2 huge games next in which we will be big underdogs despite our home record. To say our defending needs to improve would be the understatement of the century. A lot of work to do in very little time. Good luck to Unai and the lads. UTV
  23. Not at our best, especially first half, should have score more goals and unfortunately didn't so we go to Bosnia for a competitive game rather than taking the B team for a friendly. I'm sure Emery will be frustrated, considering that is when we will desperately need the rest straight after City and Arsenal. I thought we could have put Legia under much more pressure in the final 15 minutes, but some tired decision making from some and just poor decision making from others that had come on meant we never quite achieved it. Thought taking off Luiz for Dendoncker in the last 5 minutes was an odd decision...the minimal extra rest won't make any difference. Olsen looks like a fish out of water in this system. We've got to find a replacement in January. He puts the whole build up play on edge. Will be interesting to see the fallout from the issues for/with the Legia fans tonight.
  24. Emery has already talked pre-match about carefully managing the squad through fixture congestion. The only players I'm certain will start tomorrow are Martinez (doesn't trust Olsen) Lenglet (straight switch every time in Europe so far for Pau) and Kamara (because he'll miss Bournemouth). Great that we have multiple options in every position coming into this tough spell. It might not translate into points with some very tough games, but by comparison to 3 of our closest competitors, Spurs Newcastle Brighton, our current options to rotate are much stronger.
  25. It was a really poor tackle, out of frustration that he had been so poor and couldn't get near them, so with Bentancur skipping away from him he went for it anyway. Nothing to suggest it was pre-meditated or part of a wider Villa game plan, but he fully deserved a yellow. A red would have been a bit harsh but with VAR you never know. The sort of tackle that happens about once or twice a game and usually doesn't result in any serious injury. It is unfortunate that it has caused an injury. Nobody in their right mind wants to see Bentancur out for another extended period, which sadly it looks like he will be. The Spurs reaction has been wildly over the top but Villa fans are also stoking the fire. Petty and childish, considering both clubs have a lot more to focus on. Hopefully we can move on now and none of the Spurs players are looking for a real excuse for retaliation in the return fixture.
