  1. He was playing out of position and did a job for the team yesterday. Should have had a goal, and possibly an assist for Watkins (although Watkins should square for Cash there tbf). I get the impression that for a lot of our fan base that Carney is the new flavour of the month from our academy, and I think JJ is massively undervalued - He’s still only 20 years old and he’s improving. I don’t know what we expect sometimes.
  2. We’ve conceded 3, but your point still stands. In fairness I don’t think BOF was using it to dig out SG, just an interesting observation. Im pleased with how we are improving the usefulness of the possession we do have, as impressive as it looks to be having 65% possession most weeks, when you look at the Brighton game a couple of weeks ago they didn’t really do much with their ‘dominance’.
  3. I would say that Brighton is also understandable as they usually have a lot of the ball in most matches, if we are still averaging less than 40% possession in 3 months time then it will be a cause for a little concern.
  4. Was definitely a big test for us under the new management, I’m sure SG will have learnt far more about his players tonight than in the previous 2 games. I agree with your Liverpool comment, I think we will have slightly more of the ball against them and if we can go into that game off the back of a win against Leicester on Sunday then we have every chance of getting something at Anfield.
  5. I’m not saying it’s justified, was just asking the question.
  6. Similar to Archer not signing a deal, is it possible that there is a feeling of ‘empty promises’ from some of our youngsters? There has been a lot of talk about a clear pathway into the first team for our young players, but very little evidence of this other than cup games. Is there a frustration building?
  7. Great to see him getting back to fitness, while not one of our ‘best’ players I think he can add to the squad. His role in last season’s great start to the season gets massively downplayed.
  8. I think that we definitely looked more organised and showed a bit more grit yesterday. We showed little glimpses of some nice passing sequences. We were understandably very nervous. In a way, Brighton in their current form was probably a good first game for us - they knock the ball around nicely enough, and keep it well but lacked any real penetration. One thing I must note to Brighton’s credit is their ability to take the sting out of the opposition and their momentum. We started both halves very well, but after 8-10 minutes of each Brighton quietened us down. Palace next week will be another test for us, they are a bit more direct in how they will carry the ball against us, but with another week on the training ground under our belt we should be slowly starting to get more of an idea of what Gerrard’s Aston Villa will look like.
  9. That was a bit more like last season’s player of the year wasn’t it?
  10. Big game for Marv today, if he can add some consistency to his game then there might be a place for him in this team under SG.
  11. I’m a bit concerned for his longer term future with the club if SG is looking to play a similar style to what he used at Rangers, that relied on the full backs providing the width in attack and if our dabble with 3-5-2 this season showed us anything, it was that Targett is pretty limited as our sole option on the left flank. Im not writing him off, we’ve got to wait and see how things play out but if I had to put money on it I think we will see Young come into the team at LB until we purchase a new LB either in January or most likely in the summer. Of course it remains to be seen which formation is used, we are speculating at the end of the day before a ball has even been kicked during Gerrard’s reign.
  12. But we were the Matty Targett fan club? Have you given up on him?
  13. I thought “that’s a bit harsh mate”, then saw you were replying to yourself
  14. I’m a medium normally and I’ve got a large which fits nicely.
  15. Of course. Whether we would’ve picked him, that’s another matter but SG was clearly the clubs first choice and they went and got their man. This is kind of going away from my original bugbear which was more about how attitudes are changing and what wasn’t acceptable 2 weeks ago is now acceptable for a manager who is an ‘upgrade’ on what we had before.
  16. Tbh I’m not so much of it being a disaster or impending doom finishing 14th, it’s more that I do not see the point of removing a very well liked and decent manager from the role to bring in someone else on a lot more money just to do what the original guy would’ve done.
  17. I understand what you’re saying but with 81 points still to play for, I’d be very disappointed with 14th.
  18. I’m sorry, I’m not buying this. You look at that squad of players and there is no way it is a relegation squad. We’re on a bad run, and I’m not saying that he doesn’t get time, but I expect to see a decent upturn in form. He’s on over 3 times what Dean was on money-wise, what are we getting for that? I’m fair, but I expect 12th as an absolute minimum this season.
  19. Why is 14th place ok now? It wasn’t for the previous manager. Before I get pigeonholed, I’m on board with Gerrard as a choice as manager, but there are supporters who are now saying similar things to this. Now this is just my opinion, but I don’t think that DS was removed from his job because they thought he was going to take us down, but more because they don’t believe that he can take us to the next level. I’m not saying for one minute that we should be expecting top 8, but by the same token it feels like as he is being brought in to do what the previous manager couldn’t do, then Gerrard has to deliver right?
  20. Clean slate for me, Gerrard as a player is in the past. I will judge him as a manager/head coach, and like Dean he will get my full support. Welcome to the Villa!
  21. I think it’s you that misheard Gareth, the A Kebab-y is in Steve Bruce….
  22. I know it’s not quite the same, but you only have to look at JT - he’s pretty much Mr Chelsea, but you never felt he gave anything less than 100% and he became part of the club.
