His "normal" fiction probably makes him Britains most talented author (again imho) I started reading Excession about 2 months ago, one of his sci fi works and the first I'd read in his Culture series. It's a slog and a half. It's not even long. There's just something about it that makes it very hard going, I'm quite disappointed. I get the ideas in it, I can follow the story easily, I just can't quite get into it. I hit 300 pages in a week of casually reading it and since then it's been a couple of pages at a time before it gets the best of me again. I really do agree that he's absolutely brilliant in his straight fiction though. I did warn you... I think it's one of his least succesful ones; the ships' characters don't really come across at all, so even if you can follow the story, its quite hard to care about the protagonists. Try the Use of Weapons or The Player of Games.

I reckon he likes small heath as much as we do and likes to pop up every now and again just to unsettle them and **** things up.

Really enjoyed it. I recomend it definitely. I've just finished The American Future by Simon Schama. Absolutely fantastic. He really knows how to make history into a page turning experience. I was nearly crying at one point but then I'm a soft bastard.

Currently reading The American Future by Simon Schama. I've read loads of his stuff and he seems to have really struck a balance between readability and information in this one. It's basically explaining why America is the way it is now, but he does it through the eyes of individuals; it's almost like reading a whole load of mini biographies that together tell a bigger story, so for those of you who like biographies, give it a go.
