  1. I totally agree......too much is still not up to standard. I am not convinced that any other manager will do it any sooner.
  2. We have had Keane, Wilkins, Calderwood( who had a good reputation at BHA) coaches can take them to the water......but they can't make the drink. its the players. Players have to beat their man......Steve Bruce cannot do it for them.
  3. A game plan can only work if the players play to it......if they don't, it appears there is no game plan. for me it's about, players doing their job. I mean what on earth is Grealish doing in terms of contribution......where is our busy bee in midfield, we haven't got one.....too many too samey.
  4. Half these players of our are just not good enough......still.
  5. When should we expect it? I'm a villa fan, not a clairvoyant.
  6. Well first of all, he is only in the the early stages of the job. And sorry I completely disagree with your take on what the manager does.....you insinuate a player goes from a well coached manager to a poor coached manager and not take with him his personal skill base......I think that is rubbish quite frankly. Do you think a poor coach can negate the skills of George Best, Trevor Francis , Brian Little etc... You put too much responsibility on the Manager for me.......does the manager of Real Madrid take credit for Ronaldos ability.........equally a poor player is not necessarily their responsibility either.
  7. I am very touched by it all and Merse seems he has a similar personality....caring guy. Hearts are tricky things that need to get checked out regularly......I found out I had an underlying problem some time ago and I'm now on tablets for my existence. as for hugging the wife and kids, it's the best therapy in the world.....keep it up.
  8. the game is about players......the system is secondary. The best system in the world, will not negate poor players. There has to be a blend between to two......but don't keep blaming systems, they are just a by product.
  9. Football may be a simple game......but if you are telling me a manager can influence a player from not engaging in the basics, I!m sorry I'm bailing out of the debate. If you are telling me that Steve Bruce is directly responsible for some of the things I have seen.....like letting players run past you with no physical contact....poor passing, poor first touch, poor positioning. sorry.....not having any of that. If I had said to my school master.......he went past me.....but it's your fault for not setting us up properly. He would say it's your job, not mine.
  10. So,so so sad because not only was he great player......he was more importantly a great man. RIP Ugo always remembered.
  11. I am aware of the role of the manager and agree that he is responsible for the system of play. However, the best managers around have to have the best players and as their reputation is enhanced I.e Poccetini from Southampton to Spurs.....they gravitate to those better players as well as signing them, once they get to a better club. you can have all the tactics nailed down and a system to boot, but if the players can't play it or feel uncomfortable it's no good. managers can not help all players, they have to help themselves.
  12. Yes, like the curates egg, good in parts. Shankly once said, when asked what he looks for in a new player.....he said " if he can't pass the ball he is no good to me" so are you suggesting shanks would sign a player with poor passing ability and coach it in to him? I think not. The manager of any club can only do so much. I have seen things on matchday, thats not manager related, it's player related.
  13. So its naive to expect a player to be responsible for first touch, passing the ball, etc.....there are so many things the manager relies on the player to do. He is there to coach the team and set up systems, but he can't player for them. They will all tell you that.
  14. I know what you are trying to say......but you are inferring he is not good enough, by keeping him under wraps.....throw him in, he has to get used to pressure at some stage. I fear this tendency to protect them spells doubt and they start to believe the doubt, big them up and throw them in. It seems to me we have this view that they have the talent but not the physicality.....well in my view it goes hand in hand......to me one without the other spells not complete and possibly not good enough. These academy kids need to learn the art of physical contact......what better place. Ps if he was a rodeo, should we start him off on a Shetland pony? Pps its been one of the biggest worry for me over the years....soft underbelly.
  15. I don't think you need to be Villa through and through to be expected to be fired up for our local rivals. Andy Gray was from Drumchapel and Brian Little was from the North east. Both young kids.....did you need to explain to them the importance of this fixture...not on your nelly. Its intrinsic......Its either in you, or it's not.
  16. Totally agree and may I add. He has on many occasions pointed out that the business of "taking care of the ball " was absent. Now by my deduction, that does not suggest it's part of the plan......Its suggests to me it's something we have to work on and correct. The thing I find puzzling at times is......The business of blaming the manager for every mortal thing that happens on the pitch. There are certain aspects of play that the players themselves have to be responsible for. I see things during a game and say to myself......How's that down to the manager. Good players take responsibility for themselves.
  17. These players cannot be hidden away forever.....they need to play and they need to make an impact. we have had many examples over the years of young players being introduced, but they have to be ready and they have to make sure they are ready, not the coach, not the manager, themselves.....They need to take charge of themselves. you can't sit in the nest waiting for worms all your life......you have to get out there and fly. There is no right games or wrong games.......There's just games. If they apply themselves in the right manner.....they can feel confident of moving forward and forcing players out.
  18. I agree we have to stop the molly coddling.
  19. I was Born and grew up in Small Heath, so ........I was only joking. Ps it wasn't my fault it was mom & Dad......and he was a villa a fan too
  20. I don't want to see foils for anybody, with respect we have had oodles of them I want to see kids like Sessegnon......who take the game by the scruff of the neck and smash the ball in the net......16 I tell ya. And we cut ours so much slack in terms of years......we have em 22 and still refer to them being young. all things being equal he will have 6 years experience by the time he is 22.
  21. If I have ever said anything to offend you....I apologise x 100
