Gabriel Agbonlahor has been named as Aston Villa's captain after Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

Petrov's condition was diagnosed following tests after the Bulgaria international developed a fever following last month's defeat by Arsenal.

The former Celtic man has begun treatment on his condition at a London specialist hospital and he will miss the rest of the season.

Villa have now turned to Agbonlahor to lead the side in the absence of Petrov for their final seven Premier League games of the season.

Agbonlahor, who has come through the ranks at Villa, is the club's longest-serving player and he will take the armband for the first time for this weekend's trip to Liverpool.

It's not clear whether this is a permanent appointment or temporary. I never had Gabby down as captain material. I think the obvious choices were Collins or Given.

I dont think there are many options, Gabby deserves it, loyal to the club and done the grades in the club. I guess Dunne would be an option, but he is injured.

Since Given only been here since the summer the only other option would be Collins, and he doesnt seem like a fan favourite for the moment so...

Certainly warrants it more than any other available player in the squad that I can think of.

a captain needs to be able to motivate and lead by example

being at the club the longest doesnt magically grant you these abilities

we dont have a great many leaders or motivators in the squad, but gabby certainly isnt the man for it

I'm not his biggest fan because quite frankly he can go months and be completely useless, as he has done for the past 3 or 4 months. However, if this motivates him to up his game and contribute more than he has, then that would be brilliant for him and for the team. So let's hope it brings him to the next level because we need him now more than ever. Gabby on his day is unplayable. Those days are often too few and far between.

In every post I've ever seen you make about Gabby, you just slag him off. Not even related to his ability. Its pathetic

their are three things ive got a problem with

1) people saying he's a good striker when he's basically worse than Julian Joachim

2) Making someone who cant think or talk on the pitch captain

3) Him coming out and been two faced in the press
