What are the full requirements for a pass to qualify as "chance creation"? Is it just a pass that is followed by an attempt on goal?

I'm guessing "chance creation" doesn't take into account the quality of the chance created either does it? If Bannan crosses the ball and Benteke heads it wide then it's a "chance created" and so means Bannan made a good pass. But if the cross is a foot too high and just behind Benteke then it's actually a bad pass and the striker has done well to have an attempt on goal.

According the stats, though it's "chance created" Bannan good, "attempt off target" Benteke bad.

If it was that straight forward to work out then managers wouldn't watch the game, they'd sit in front of a laptop looking at a screen like this -

That's a fair criticism.

It doesn't affect our evaluation of Bannan though because we're not interested in the total chances he's created but the relative number of chances he's created compared to other players in other teams, and to other players in the same team.

The same methodology used to count the chances Bannan creates applies to all players who 'create chances'.

Steven Gerrard has created 56 chances. How many of those were 'bad quality' chances? Doesn't matter. What matters for our evaluation is how many chances Gerrard has made compared to Bannan or Cleverley.

Of course it matters, and this is where actually watching the player comes into play instead of just going on stats.

I totally agree. Statistics don't tell you everything.

They are a useful aid, especially because memory is often fickle and prone to aligning with one's pre-existing bias.

He isn't even good enough to be a squad player

if only lerner was willing to spend money, id like to see him replaced with huddlestone, but isnt going to happen, so stuck with bannan i guess...
