Gone: Downing shows real loyalty to us

Spurs and Liverpool approached him in the January window prior to his move to us however would not touch him when he had a broken foot.

Oh right it gets better  So it was a kind of "let Villa pay for your recovery then when your back fit shove in a transfer request & we'll come & get you"?

Unbelievable the levels some will sink too. If i was Randy i'd say "your staying put sunshine! You owe us & the fans here at least another season & if you don't like it you shouldn't have come here, signed a contract & then tried to take the p**s.. Now put your boots on & start running mother f****er"

Thats basically whats happened though. Liverpool and Spurs didnt want him because of the injury and we too the gamble and showed a bit of faith in him. Now he wants out. How he has got the nerve is beyond me.

Like you say, it doesnt get much lower than that. This bloke is pondlife. Get the best price possible and get rid NOW so we can get a replacement in.

I cannot understand why the club simply cant say to Downing and other clubs he is not for sale. Tottenham have done it with Modric. If he stays and dos'nt perform, he dont get played. Things need to change, we are where we are because we keep selling our best players, the board are the only ones who can stop this.

Liverpool think they can get Downing for around 12-15 mil. We had better stick with 20+ if we have to sell.

If we still had Young, Milner, Barry, we would have a good squad built around these players and for me be boardering champions league football for sure.

A big problem with our best players going is not loosing the player, its having to build the squad back up without that player. If it continues to happen we will be heading nowhere.

It has to stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too right.. It is for me the single biggest reason why we never quite make that leap between top 4 & the rest... We don't buy quickly enough as in if we need 5 players to make that leap we buy 3 so we just miss out.. then a couple leave the following season & we don't replace the Barry or Milner or Young etc putting us back to needeing 5 players again.. so we buy 3 etc etc etc & we end up not making any progress. You have to wonder why at some point we don't say to the Ashley Young of that year "Sorry but your gonna have to stay another year " then buy in the other 4 players needed & make the leap when it then doesn't matter if Young stayed or not as we would be in the Champs League anyhow so would be able to then attract top players.. you never know he may even then decide to sign a new contract!..

Obviously it's more complicated than that of course & is no doubt all about the cost involved but it's still flippin frustrating.

Sell downing - we should sell anyone who doesn't want to play for club on our terms. We should allow players to have less than 2 years left on contract.

Yet I bet you would be fine with Ireland, Warnock and Beye on the pitch despite the fact they care even less. That's what's gonna happen under McLeish, the signs are there yet again.

If he gives us £20m he can go. Because that is what he is worth to us, and that is what it will cost to replace him.

And if he doesn't like that, he should shut the **** up and honour the contract HE signed.

Onlyone difference with those players you listed that was due to the previous manager, if they now say they want to play for McLeish then what? They've been available but they don't move because of the wages Mr O'Neill put them on.

I don't think Lerner should be berated and lambasted for what he's done for Aston Villa.

I'm not. I'm criticising for what he can no longer do.

You were arguing that two years ago and this last January he spent 18m rising to 24m on Darren Bent. One swallow doesn't make a summer but how you can compare him with Doug I don't know. The level of investment hasn't dropped so dramatically even amid the furore of sell to buy, which every normal club does by the way.

Randy Lerner doesn't have Sheik Mansour type cash to spend ...get over it.

I don't think he will go, it's all just paper talk about Liverpool being on the verge of signing him. The board know that selling him in the same window as AY would be suicide even if they offer silly money. If he hands in a transfer requests then it's up to RL to rip it up and tell him to honnor the contact he signed and tell him to show some **** gratitude & respect to a club that took him in for a LOT of money when he was seriously injured and helped turn him into an England star.

I think when we are saying that we won't be having the whole of the Ashley young money to spend, and flogging off Downing - does Lerner even have doug ellis money to spend, let alone a Sheiks.

What success have we had on the pitch under Lerner compared to under Ellis ?

So far the timeline comparison isnt bad with an unlucky League cup defeat.

Two League cup wins shouldn't be difficult to beat in the next 8 years or so or maybe it will as the changes to football have been dramatic even in the last 3 years.

We haven't been relegated under Randy Lerner something Doug used to regard as an inconvenience.

Pilchard - tell me how much money has Randy Lerner invested in playing staff since he came here?

The nail in the coffin as far as Downing is concerned was the appointment of our new manager. We all expected a decent manager chosen from what was available and we got 'Tin Tin!' The appointment showed a lack of ambition from the club and now Downing will go. You can't blame him for that. Dalglish is building a new Liverpool and they will be challenging for honours next season while we, after again selling our best player and appointing a manager who has presided over two relegations in three years will struggle to best the likes of Fulham and Newcastle.

Anyone who thinks that Downing will stay now needs a reality check. All is not lost however. If we can bring NZogbia in to replace Young and Johnson from Man City to replace Downing then both those players will provide enough chances for Bent to keep us at least mid table or slightly better and we should show a profit to keep the chairman happy.

When Downing does leave for plop then Bent will be next. Maybe not this season as the top six don't really need him but if he has another good season with us then Plop might just come in at the end of next season and Bent will go.

We are a club in turmoil at the moment and teams above can smell blood and will continue to try and steal our better players.

Did Carroll walk in with crutches? did he recover within 6 weeks? a player being out for 4-6months makes a huge difference whether to go for him or not. We took that gamble they didn't.

Did we pay £35 million for Downing?

Carroll certainly didn't make a full recovery in six weeks. Liverpool will only be getting a fully fit Carroll next season. All clubs are willing to take a gamble on a quality player. Look at Man Utd with RVN.

My original point is nothing to do with the gamble of signing a player with an injury, it's the fact that we beat Spurs and Liverpool to the player. When it comes to signing quality players clubs simply do not look upon injuries as gambles. They will speak to specialists before the signing is made and will have a clear idea of what the recovery process will be. That's why the likes of Carroll, RVN and Downing get signed. They are not gambles if it is clear from medical examination that they will make full recoveries.

RVN was not purchased until a full recovery was made! Carroll made a debut didn't he, it was 6 to 8 weeks, so he played. The point about Downing was he broke his foot in May we signed him in June, knowing he would be out for half of the season, we gave him a pay rise no doubt a signing on fee and possibly paid for his medical expenses. Spurs and Liverpool would not sign a player with a broken foot, so really your argument is flawed, you keep using Carroll but played last season for LIVERPOOL!!!
