America has 5% of the world's population. Yet it has 25% of the worlds population of prisoners.

Given that it is mandatory to work for a pittance while jailed in America, this sure does make an interesting 'slavery' discussion. Especially when you add the racial breakdown of American prisoners. These think so too.

Cats and dogs have developed more childlike features (big eyes, heads etc) as a way of placing themselves into a family structure normally occupied by a human child.

That's pretty cool. I watched a program about dogs and they have been very important in human history and development. They are quite clever in that how many once wild animals end up living 5 star hotel existence in houses with central heating, regular meals and walks all provided for them at regular times.

That's just natural selection though. Albeit driven by us. Families (or loners as the case may be) go for the dogs with those characteristics. Then those pets, more than the other ones, survive and breed. Eventually the big eye/head gene is prevalent.

Unless you're saying that dogs go around trying to widen their eyes as much as possible while thinking "I'm well cute like this, mustn't blink".

Not quite.

Apparently the genes for tameness, especially in dogs, also affect genes controlling appearance. As the animals, over generations, have become tamer for our own needs, it seems they unwittingly also become more and more 'cute'. It's been suggested this is because tameness is something associated with juveniles, who also have the same 'cute' appearance, and that there is a connection in the genes for these 2 attributes. This has then, just from this simple appearance trait alone, essentially put them in competition with children, as they stopped being solely effectively a tool and more of an emotional bond.

In our endeavours for natural selection of tameness, we initially unwittingly ended up making dogs look cuter, and as we then adapted them into companions rather workers, we started to exagerrate the offshoot of 'cuteness' more and more.

Final

In case you are wondering what that is, it's Atéletico Madrid's route to the Europa League final this year. They have played 14 games so far, they have lost 4, drew 8 and won only 2, yet they find themselves in a European final. You know the jammy bastards will win it, dont you?

If you have an hour spare, you might enjoy this.

In ye olden days during the times of freak shows being acceptable, freak show owners used to have "pig faced women"

Obviously they weren't pig faced women. They were, in fact, bears that were fed alcohol until they were stinking drunk, shaved, put in a dress and given tits.

That reads as "I'm curious but wouldn't like you to think so" :P In the 1800's I imagine a Brighton-esque padded novelty bra :)
