I believe our Champions League qualification means we are also in the UEFA Youth League next season!

It will be interesting to see how the extra games and experience against different types of opposition will impact our decision to send players on loan.

I think the criteria will be players born after 1st January 2005 + up to 5 players over that age.

I imagine a lot of the recruitment for next season is already sorted behind the scenes, but playing in UEFA Youth League might allow us to attract a few more

Just don't look up who won the UEFA Youth League last season 😬

Here are the rules for next season: https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regulations-of-the-UEFA-Youth-League-2024/25/Article-28-Player-eligibility-Online

A few highlights:

  • 35 of the 40 players in the overall squad have to be born on or after 1 January 2006.
  • 5 of the 40 players in the overall squad can be born on or after 1 January 2005, but only if they have been in the Villa academy for the past 2 years, or 2 of the past 3 years with 1 loan to another English club.
  • Villa must select a match day squad of 20 the night before the game.
    • 14 of those 20 must be players that have been at Villa for the past 2 years, or 2 of the past 3 years with 1 loan. So 6 players can be newer signings, e.g. Aidan Borland.
    • Only 3 of those 5 older players registered in the overall 40 can be picked in your match day 20.
  • Any player who plays in 3 or more Champions League matches is no longer eligible to play in the Youth League.

Lennon Moss played for England U15s earlier today in their 4-3 win over the USA, he's previously played for Wales at U15 and U16 level

Our U18s beat Hertha Berlin 4-1, Broggio got a goal and two assists, they're in Berlin, not sure if if it was a one off game, or part of a tournamet

Highlights from Hertha Berlin win including Rory Wilson hat-trick

Call me dense, but why were there penalties in the Hertha game? We won the game in regular time?

There were also penalties in the Mainz game, must just be something they do in that particular tournament for the practice of doing them in a competitive game or at least more competitive than they would be in training. If they're group games it might be that penalties are worth an additional point or something

Ted Rowe is a good technical player, and I thought he showed signs of improvement this season, but he got to the age where the club have to make a decision. Sounds like he did okay out on loan, so hopefully that will help him find a new team.

Yeah, he 's a good player technically and he makes good decisions, but ultimately he's a victim of his genetics sadly - if tiny Ted were eight or nine inches taller he'd be playing at a very high level.
