To give Chris his due like a lot of us, the best stuff we have listened to this year may have been from years ago. probably some dub shit from the 70's

yep, my technique is to buy on vinyl if I'm pretty sure it's a keeper, and CD for my lucky dips

stuff with 2016 printed on the back has been a bit thin, off the top of my head:

Ulver - ATGCLVLSSCAP - ok at first, but the acid test is, I couldn't tell you where it currently is.

Nisennenmondai - N/A - double album live mixed - loved it, still in the car, still getting a bit of play

Goat - Requiem - bought on vinyl - still getting some play

Llwybr Llaethog - Dub Cymraeg - bought on vinyl - just superb (recorded 2013 but took them a while to get their shit together)

Selector Dub Narcotic - This Party Is Just Getting Started - bought on vinyl, went to see him live, inspirational, played every weekend at some point

there is one more new 2016 album on its way for me. Alabama 3 - Blues - going to see them at Shepherds Bush Empire on Saturday, I'll buy it there

plus a shout for the CD release: SFA - Fuzzy Logic

CwiYJGJWIAA1lBk.jpg

Which includes unreleased versions and earlier takes, so is that 'new'?

But then yes, shitloads of dub shit from the 70's.

Got a few long time wants, which was nice.

None of it was recorded near anywhere near 2016.

There were 2 or 3 things I sought after hearing here and there, but discovered they were downloads :o

Of which this was favourite!

This is what the 90s sounded like on speed, but without the speed! :D

At 2:03 you'll be back there, all sweaty on the dance floor.

I used to think I had my finger on the pulse when it came to music. I know it's only page 2 but I've only got 2 albums that have been mentioned so far.

Not sure I can do a top 10 but I've enjoyed albums this year by:

A Tribe Called Quest

Janxta Funk

Sleafords

Badbadnotgood

Noname

Quantic

Charles Bradley

The James Hunter Six

Radiohead

Paris DJ's (or was that last year?)

Andy Kaufman

Another three

מזמור (mizmor) - Yodh

I found the largest picture I could so you can have a proper look at this gorgeous cover. Yes, the album is as bleak as you may presume from the above

jeff-rosenstock-worry.jpg

Jeff Rosenstock - Worry

The dude is a legend in the modern skapunk scene (see Arrogant Sons of Bitches and Bomb the Music Industry! for proof), and this continues the trend of anything he does being gold

PAWS - No Grace

Once upon a time (and by that I mean about 3 years ago) I would of hated this. And as much as I have retained the harder edge of my music taste over the years, in other ways it has softened considerably. This is the best example of that I can give, an album that me and the girly can listen to and enjoy, and for such a rarity as that I think it must be included.

I have space for one more, I'm not really sure what to do with it yet.

Got my PDJ's a few weeks after you. Mine arrived early January.

I like James Hunter. Thought 'The Hard Way' was sadly overlooked. He's nothing new, but neither are Ed Sheeran and co who the mainstream media lap up.

Hopefully his shift to Dap Tone will introduce him to a market that'll appreciate him a bit more.

This year has been stellar for music of all genres. As a result my Top 10 is a Top 20 as I couldn't leave some of these off the list;

01. FM-84 - Atlas [Electronic Dance Music/Synth]
02. Every Time I Die - Low Teens [Punk/Metal]
03. Xenia Rubinos - Black Terry Cat [Pop/Soul]
04. Thrice - To Be Everywhere Is Nowhere [Rock]
05. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Dissociation [Metal]
06. MASTER BOOT RECORD - C:\> CHKDSK /F [Electronic Dance Music/Metal]
07. Glass Animals - How To Be A Human Being [Indie/Pop]
08. Bad Rabbits - American Nightmare [Funk/Soul/Punk]
09. Deftones - Gore [Hard Rock/Metal]
10. VHS Glitch - Moral Decay [Electronic Dance Music/Synth]
11. Dance Gavin Dance - Mothership [Rock/Metal]
12. Metallica - Hardwired...To Self-Destruct [Rock/Metal]
13. Esperanza Spalding - Emily's D+Evolution [Jazz/Soul]
14. Norma Jean - Polar Similar [Metal]
15. GosT - Non Paradisi [Electronic Dance Music/Synth]
16. MSTRKRFT - OPERATOR [Electronic Dance Music]
17. Opeth - The Sorceress [Progressive Rock]
18. Future Of The Left - The Peace & Truce Of Future Of The Left [Punk/Rock]
19. Akani - Through My Darkest Infernal [Metal]
20. Rose Thaler - Black Abyss [Electronic Dance Music/Synth]

This year was sublime and I left so many albums out that would have made it any other year. I hope 2017 is as good if not better.

[Added simple genres to each. These genres likely aren't specific enough, but they are a guide. If you don't like Metal then many of those above are on the heavier side of things. Same for the Dance music it's all rather on the more aggressive sounding side (except FM-84 and Rose Thaler) as that's my jam, but if anything there is in a genre you kinda dig and haven't heard it before then I hope you like it.]

OMG I really am old

I'll have to have a listen to some of these. Problem is I have no idea what genres they are.

As for owning. Doesn't everyone just have a subscription these days?

Thanks. I'll pop down to Woolies or Our Price to see if they've got some Maxell C90s. I won't have those C120s, too thin and they snap apparently.

I added simple genres to all of mine after seeing your post. It may still not be anything you're into and that's cool, but I thought I'd do my best to assist and hopefully others will too.
