Voinjama
Didn't Chelsea finish 2nd in his 2nd season? Hardly poor.
VillaChris
If you look back they went from November 10th to January 12th winning one league game.
kurtsimonw
Ancelotti IMO is probably the best manager in European competition. But he's been not even average in terms of domestic titles, he's been bad for me. He took over mega money PSG who were in first place and managed not to win the league. A decade in Italy as manager with 2 of the top 3 clubs and only 1 title to show for it. He's done okay overall, but 3 league titlles in 15 years managing the very top clubs in the league is not a good return, far from it.
Rovers13
I think id rather have mourinho for European competition. He's just a better manager. Not that ancelotti isn't very good. Edited May 25, 2014 by Rovers13

You've kind of missed the point. It wasn't a question of who is the best manager, you need to read the OP.

Avfc96
Didn't Chelsea finish 2nd in his 2nd season? Hardly poor. They collapsed mid season crashing out of the race for the League cup, League and FA cup.
GENTLEMAN
A certain Giovanni Trapattoni's managerial and playing career makes him a contender for the title as well. This.... but don't say cat until you've got it in the bag!
PauloBarnesi
Probably a better way of comparing managers and players is giving various weighting to achievements. That Ancelotti has won the Champions League with a big club with an expensively put together squad, is hardly a surprise? The Cryuff was a success at a major club as manager? In the end we might that footballers greatest player/manager is someone quite unexpected...
villaajax
But were Barcelona a major club when Cruyff came in? They had only won La Liga once in the 15 previous seasons.
PauloBarnesi
Just because you don’t win the domestic league doesn’t mean you aren’t a major club. Liverpool haven’t won it for how many years? 26 or so, are they not a major club?
StanBalaban
I remember there was a point where I thought Ancelotti was going to be the next Villa manager. Turned out it was McLeish.
VillaChris
Beckenbauer would be the one for me even if he was just a part time manager really. Won the world cup as player and manager within a 16 year period and did the same with the European cup especially as Marseille weren't that fancied. And that was it for him really. Voinjama
I didn't know he was Marseille manager when they won the first ever Champions League in 1993. He's gone up a notch in my view. Still behind Cruyff though.
villaajax
Didn't win the European Cup with Maseille, they were runners up. Won it the next season without him though. I've always though of Beckenbauer as more than a bit overrated.
villaajax
Correction, looking into it, he was only at Marseille for 4 months so didn't really have anything to do with the European Cup anyway.
VillaChris
Ah I thought he was still there when they won it in 1993, didn't realise he'd left and it was Raymond Geothels.
