They probably thought kill a few Israelis take some hostages retreat back into Gaza, await inevitable Israeli incursion, have, like previous clashes, a limited war with Israel. Wait for International pressure to mount and ceasefire to be called. However they probably didn’t think they would be able so easily to kill so many Israelis, or take so many hostages. As a result, Israel’s anger and thirst for retribution is far greater than before. I don’t think Israel will stop, not until they feel Hamas ability to wage war is massively degraded. Unfortunately, the inevitable result of that, is human suffering on a scale not seen before.
