  1. The greatest player to ever grace the earth is what you meant to say. And I know what I’m talking about because I’m by far the greatest player in our house.
  2. I thought Pepe Reina was knocking on but......
  3. 37 in 112 that’s almost bang on 1 in 3, you’re right, I didn’t think he’d scored that many. Perhaps my expectations were even higher. But he worked hard too, which is why I was trying to use him as a good example of what fans like to see in a player. Another Dean Saunders would do us just now.
  4. Spot on. Dean Saunders for example had a very average goal return but was popular because he always put in a shift.
  5. Apparently his club have said that they’re interested in selling him in the next couple of windows. Do they have financial problems or is he the French Scott Hogan?
  6. Seems like transfer links are like buses.
  7. I once joined the AA, I didn’t drink any less but I used a false name and a disguise.
  8. Why would he go to a team on the slide when he can come to the mighty Villa and help us on our climb to glory. Or 17th as it is sometimes referred to.
  9. I’ve googled him, he was 30 when he joined Chelsea and was there for 7 years.
  10. I remember when Zola signed for Chelsea, I think he’d been hawked around a few club’s including us. I’m not sure exactly how old he was, but I’m sure he was the wrong side of 30 and nobody was particularly interested. Then Chelsea signed him, he became a legend and he seemed to play there for years. Giroud could be our Zola signing.
  11. I heard it from the man’s own mouth TRO in an interview he gave. Morley was a kick up the backside man, people like Brian Little needed the arm. In fact when we signed Brian we also gave his brother Alan a contract. We knew Alan wasn’t good enough for the first team, but we brought him down to look after Brian who would have been homesick. There’s a difference between tough guys like Ron and bullies like Kevin MacDonald appears to have been.
  12. There’s a balance to be struck, Saunders understood that some players respond to a bollocking , eg Tony Morley and others needed an arm around them, eg Brian Little. Also a manager has to be true to himself, if Dean Smith isn’t the yelling and bawling type he can’t fake it, the players would see through him. I’m sure there are coaches on the staff that are more able to be vocal with players. Perhaps Dean is a little too nice, who knows we’re not in the dressing room, but he has to be genuine and believe in his way of doing things, so that players will believe in what he tells them too.
  13. I’ve been reading the comments section of the BBC report on yesterday’s game. Despite the BBC naming Maupay MOTM he’s been getting a lot of stick from some of their fans. Their main complaint seems to be that he never shoots, so perhaps we didn’t buy him because he’s not as good as many of us, me included thought he was. I know he’s often touted as the one that got away in the summer, but I’d be interested to hear what people who went to Brighton yesterday thought of him.
  14. I was just looking at the table and if we had beaten Arsenal, they would be on 26 points and we’d be on 25. Fine margins, let’s just hope we’re on the right side of the important margin at the end of the season.
  15. Take a picture and post it on here. Not because I don’t believe you but I need my fix!
  16. It’s often the case that good players don’t make good coaches/managers. I think there’s an element of expecting players to be able to do things that came naturally to them but with less natural ability needs more coaching to get anywhere near that level. Lets face it playing at the heart of Chelsea’s defence and then coaching our defence is like swapping a Ferrari for a Skoda and still expecting to win races.
  17. I agree TRO that recruitment will be very important and with all the scouting and due diligence in the world an element of luck is always a factor too. Samatta sounds like he might be a good striker, if he gets a goal early perhaps with a bit of luck it could get him up and running straight away. Equally he could go a few games without scoring or worse still get injured. It’s finger crossing time!
  18. I believe that there is a clear difference between expectations and aspirations. No team can expect to win anything. Man U went over 20 years without winning the league and Liverpool have gone a similar period, although that will quite probably end this season. However we can and indeed should aspire to better things. There Is no need to limit our aspirations but we have to manage them for the situation that we’re in. Dean said at the start of the season that we should enter every game with a plan to win it, that doesn’t mean we expect to win every game. We are a big club in stature, history and infrastructure but currently we aren’t a big club on the pitch. We can and should aspire to being a big team again but to achieve that will need time and hard work. We can’t just expect teams to come to Villa Park look at our wonderful ground, marvel out our history and respectfully lose because we’re Aston Villa and they’re only Brighton or whoever, no disrespect intended. Things that make us a big club should be used to our best advantage when appropriate but once on the pitch they count for very little.
  19. I’m not sure we’ve ever had a nasty sod in my Villa lifetime going back to the early 70s. But we have had plenty of hard men who took no nonsense off anyone. Macca is always remembered for just being so good and reading the game just incredibly well, but he was also hard as nails. No one messed with Alun Evans, Ken McNaught or Peter Withe. Frank Carrodus, Alex Crowley and Sid Cowans weren’t hard men but were just tough and would run through brick walls for the team every game. More recently we’ve had Martin Laursen, Olof Melberg, Carlos Cuellar etc. None of these players were nasty but they were rock solid and refused to yield in the face of any opposition. For me that is what the current team lacks. The opposition need to know they’ve been in a game win, lose or draw. We don’t need nasty and we all remember what Dion did to that nasty little cowardly sh1t, who’s name I won’t mention, but we do need tough.
