When you press teams there is no need for a dedicated DM. The two in front of the back 4 are more like deep lying playmakers. Imagine them as football's equivalent to NFL quarterbacks. The remaining forward players are a fluid unit providing width, movement, key final 3rd passes and, hopefully, goals.

In his professional career his record is 1 every 2 games. Unfortunately he had only played 2 games! ? If he stays fit, and we play to his strengths, we have a 20+ goal a season striker on our hands.

Lansbury was one of the better midfielders in the championship when we brought him but, like many of Bruce's signings, has been woefully utilised. Bruce loved to put square pegs in round holes, so we really haven't seen many of our squad (including lansbury) play to their true potential. I think he will be fine under Smith.

Two things that were conspicuous by their omissions in the press conference... Talk of grass roots youth development /'Villa engine' and the manager rumours e.g Henry. Clearly the press was told not to ask about other candidates. But when purslow was taking about Pitarch's role he didn't mention youth development, analytics or a joined up approach or ethos. I'm hoping it was just an oversight in the presser rather than an oversight in the strategy.

I believe in your system as well! Most clubs can not compete if they try and out spend others, as it is not a sustainable strategy - villa can attest to this. Clubs like Brentford, Leicester and Southampton are light years ahead of us and are reaping the benefits. Hopefully DS coming will start to move us into the modern era.

Consistency will be the biggest issue. Sometimes it isn't possible to play pretty football and you have to win ugly - like many of Bruce's successes. Smith strikes me as a bit of a Martinez... Gets plaudits for good football but doesn't win enough to be a success. I hope DS learns to adapt and, if he does, we will be a force.

Brentford had 2 assistants, while arsenal has a similar set up. Its not beyond the realms of possibly that this scenario will happen at Villa.

Playoffs is the realistic target this year, unless we go on a fulham style run sooner rather than later. Bruce is partly responsible for this situation, along with Dr Who and our new owners. Bruce for poor management, Tony for financial mismanagement and the new owners for indecisive management by not getting rid of Bruce in the summer.

The smith appointment has really grown on me and could be the most important in the club's future. Our first head coach position is telling as to the direction the club is going in. I think we are going to take inspiration from the Brentford model and they're is no better person to share the inner workings of it than DS. Could we be finally moving into the modern era of football?!
