  1. I think you're being harsh there. Targett was being linked with Leicester for big money during the summer. He'd be worth £15m no bother - young, English, plenty of games under his belt. If Trezeguet recovers to the same standard he was pre-injury we'd easily get £10m back for him. He's scored high profile goals for us in the league and cup - that alone would get us our £10m back these days. Bottom half of the PL standard players are worth £10-20m these days - Targett and Trezeguet are good enough for the bottom half of the table.
  2. In fairness the club has always done business professionally - the Xia/Wyness era was just a aberration (in more ways than one...). I remember the club being praised by other clubs when they signed or sold players under the Lerner regime in terms of their professionalism. Nobody really had a clue what was happening under O'Neill until it was done. Maybe Lambert was a bit more leaky to the press.
  3. I don't think Smith's era was anywhere near as bad as Sherwood's. When things went bad for Sherwood he dropped all the Paddy Riley players to try and prove a point and went all in with Lescott/Richards/Gestede who were clearly his own signings. Then the reports started to leak out about how he wanted Townsend and Adebayor and was overruled.... Smith never complained about recruitment under his tenure. He said he was given choices by Suso and then he had the final say for example with Wesley. He always backed all of the signings publicly. Maybe Guilbert is the only one who was close being thrown under the bus by him.
  4. Strangely enough Targett is one of those players too. I think if the club wanted to move him on we'd make a decent profit.
  5. Pressing isn’t an individual attribute. Ings can press all he wants but if it’s not done as a team it’s a waste of energy and teams can easily move the ball up the field. Under Smith this season the pressing wasn’t working for whatever reason. Gerrard has got a system working sort of but Ings hasn’t really played a major part of it yet. There’s no reason why Ings and Watkins can’t work together if Gerrard and his team coach them well enough so when they press it’s as a team and not individuals.
  6. I get that we should be largely buying players that are on an upward trajectory, but surely there’s an argument for buying players that are at their peak right now - that can deliver us points and get us up the table. Is there any point in us having two up and coming players in one position? Realistically only one of them is going to realise their potential with us not both. If we’re going to have two left backs it makes sense to have one who is delivering their best football now and one who will be doing it in 2-3 years time. It’s not necessarily an argument to sign Digne or Tagliafico - more just pointing out that a squad with a balance of potential and experience is better than a squad full of potential.
  7. What’s the problem with a 29yo? He’s one of the best LBs in the PL.
  8. Man United (or football in general) didn’t consider CR7’s proven payoff of a rape accuser any sort of red line so I’d say they’re unlikely to take any moral stance on Bissouma either.
  9. Think the Alvarez ship has sailed. He’ll be off to Real Madrid or United. Hottest up and comer in the world at the moment.
  10. Pretty sure there’s a 10 year old Coutinho speculation thread we could reopen?
  11. Yeah he was the closest to Grealish we had last season in terms of carrying the ball up the pitch. He's class to watch moving with the ball at his feet. If Gerrard can raise his game as he has some other players he'll be one of our best players. Any ideas when he's due back?
  12. Yeah - I guess he's set his own standards so people get on his back when he doesn't score a perfect hat-trick every game.
  13. Lol - I completely forgot he played for us. Arrived with Didier Agathe and Petrov when O'Neill took over.
  14. It’s also sending a message to any unvaccinated players currently at the club.
  15. Saw an article today where Gerrard said that Lange would include whether a player is vaccinated or not in the club’s criteria for assessing a player.
  16. Born to Run would've been way before 1988. Might've been Tunnel of Love or Born in the USA.
  17. We had the sixth best defence in the league last year in terms of goals conceded - I wouldn't say that was a major weakness. We also conceded very few once Smith brought Mings in for the Championship run in.
  18. Surely Ashley Young will go straight in? Watkins, and Nakamba have looked like different players since Gerrard has come in and Young and Luiz don't seem far behind. Young's age is not evident in the slightest at the moment - he's obviously got that same inbuilt fitness that Milner has for Liverpool that just doesn't seem to wane with age.
  19. Nigel DeJong said the other night that Bailey was dogged with niggling injuries for his last 18 months at Bayer Leverkusen.
  20. You'd like to think it's a fairly light hearted threat. Heart rate isn't necessarily an indication of application or attitude. Is he going to drop Pirlo because his heart rate doesn't go above 100bpm?
  21. Agreed but there's a very fine line to be tread between what you're referring to here and Tim Sherwood territory - where he was utterly convinced that he was the greatest manager there ever was and would be nothing but successful here.
  22. There's basic self-pride and professionalism. Downing tools and hoping the manager gets sacked (and putting your club in a relegation battle) does not look good on your CV. For some reason I'm listening to Talksport in the mornings and Gabby Agbonlahor has somehow managed to get a job as a pundit there. He is utterly brainless - but his attitude when talking about his own career is pretty pathetic. No manager would've stood a chance with idiots like him in the dressing room.
  23. If they'd managed to get Emile Smith-Rowe to Villa Park I'm sure we'd be in a much much better position than we're in right now. JWP I can take or leave, but Smith-Rowe would've been an incredible signing. Based on how much he's kicked on this season he would've filled the Grealish shaped hole quite nicely. Of course his agent was using us to get him a better contract but if there was even a 5% chance of him coming here it was worth pursuing.
  24. We don't know the inside story behind the offers for either player so I reckon it's a bit unfair to call their pursuits amateurish. It would've been the same approach that landed us Ings, Bailey, Buendia, Martinez, Watkins, Cash etc etc...
