    Not too worried, it’s a marathon not a sprint. We should know where we are come the end of December when we will have played most teams once. Would be very happy with 5th or 6th given context to the project. I am enthused by our momentum and trajectory, we are not fluking our current position, we are there on merit, we are an entirely convincing team and squad that is only improving, it’s been a sea change and huge leap in capability. Every defeat has a story rather than us just being the worse team, you sense all defeats inform Emery on how he adapts so it doesn’t happen again. I think next season is the big push, that’s when we cement our CL credentials. I am very much enjoying this though.

    Solid display, great result. Came off the boil a little at 3-0, but 3points and only two off top at this stage is the only story. Also, highest goal scorers in the division. What’s happening here is amazing. If we get a result against Spurs we go 4th. Don’t want to think about where we would be if we had beaten Forrest (top of the league)

    Re highline: I know it’s a forum, but honestly, leave the footballing decisions to Emery, remind yourselves he’s doing alright so far. Need to win today, would great to smash them to get things back on track. Would love to see Moreno able to have game time today too. Gutted to drop points last match, would be sitting pretty today if we hadn’t, don’t think Emery will let that happen today.

    Villa fans need a object of criticism, seems like with Pau providing little ammunition for them the attention has now switched to Zaniolo. Give the guy a chance? He needs a bit of time, there is an excellent player in there, however I fully expect Ramsey to rain his staring place but it would be great to have players of his potential in the squad.

    Looked off side to me? Why arent we shown the lines? I call bullshit. That aside, we are generally off the boil as a team, and tonight we are too ponderous and not sharp enough on interplay.

    No debate for me, its part of Emery's system and our whole system of defensive and offensive play relies on it. Change that and might as well rip everything up. But its working well as the table shows: we are scoring more, have more possession and are catching opposition offside time and time again.

    Wow, what a time to stumble, a win would have put us solidly in 3rd given the completion of the weekends games. But that in itself is remarkable, we are still in heady territory and playing well despite not getting the rub yesterday. I think Spurs bubble has burst but we need to watch out for Newcastle. The silver lining is every defeat is a lesson that makes us stronger, Emery will be all over this. With players coming back we are in a good place, our run to the end of December as a whole is important, not so much individual games.

    Don’t underestimate their ability at home, they aren’t undefeated for no reason, they raise their game - credit to them, they are fighting for everything, hopefully they run out of steam at some point. Dont think we will be as bad second half.

    Not poor, quite even. Haven’t hit our heights. Strangely stuggled in the middle of the park and little space to run into. Luiz is off the boil but I think it’s because there isn’t the usual cohesion of players around him (McGinn/Diaby/Kamara). Cash too often has no target when receiving the ball in their third. Hopefully Unai has the plan to break this down and offer more space and chances, but you feel vulnerable on their breaks. Need an early goal.

    I just don’t get the Sanson saga, he looks a decent player to me, theoretically perfect for the PL, and in response the the point made on the previous page, better than Dendonker (but different types). There must be some other issue, either prickly/disruptive personality or maybe struggles with taking on field instructions/discipline?

    We could do with a RB as competition for Cash (would love Frimpong), but that’s it. Yes we would prefer a better understudy to Martinez, but I’d suggest it’s not a priority. All the speculation should be tempered by the return of Ramsey, Moreno, Buendia and Mings - imagine buying those and adding them to our squad. We still need to off load a few, but I honestly don’t see much happening until the end of the season. I have no idea what money we have but you’d hope we keep it for the summer, because if we get Champions League we are looking a Diaby level strengthening. Nico Williams seems to be going to Barcelona next season, but if the money is there it’s that level of player I hope we add. Another DM or Goncalves, Vlahovic, or Chiesa at some point, maybe a superior RB. I do like Dani Cabellos, but with Tielemans finding his feet, and Ramsey and Buendia to come back, I reckon that’s unlikely.

    NSWE have given him the keys to the club, he won’t find that elsewhere. There is a distinct lack of politics here, it is a straightforward club. The dressing room is full of honest players, no super stars or egos. The only thing we are lacking is Champions League. If he achieves that I reckon NSWE will back him as well as any owners anywhere else, I don’t see him going anywhere. I reckon he will be Villa’s Sir Alex.
