Maybe Gerrard has assessed both of them and don’t think they are what he needs. As for indifferent season, Watkins had one good season and one indifferent season. Was he a one season wonder or Jack made him look better than he actual is like Jack did for Targett. Or was last season just an off season with early injury in preseason, change of manager and loss of key creative player and it’s taken him time to adjust. If we got a big bid for him I wouldn’t be adverse to selling him, not convinced he can take us to the next level.

The snip bits we get from apparent sources at the club suggest one of the positions Gerrard wants to buy is a striker (along with another midfielder and back up left back) so while we can’t take any of that as definite it suggests we may be in for one. We may not know who could be an upgrade but I expect the club to have an upgrade list for most positions if those players become available and we have a realistic chance of getting them. An example was Digne was an upgrade on Targett yet before the January transfer window nobody would’ve thought of him available or gettable. Not saying it’s going to happen but at the same time neither Watkins or Ings covered themselves in glory under Gerrard’s tenure.

I think the players we are bringing in are exciting, I’m hoping Gerrard can then translate that quality to on the field performances. I didn’t see that last season but that’s fine but he needs to bring it this season.

My point was less even about just the Villa, it was more about that if you get the same points overall, it makes no difference whether you have streaky run of good results then streaky run of bad results or whether you win one, lose one repetitively if they end up with the same points total then the latter isn’t superior/better than the other one which the other poster was referring to. As for the Villa, we just need to be better.

I agree, Klopp and Pep are on holiday at the moment so they won’t have planned with the PL when they want to play each team

Yes, just my opinion but I’d be surprised if we didn’t bring one in. What that means for our current collection of strikers I don’t know but I think Gerrard will want one.

I think we need another striker, I have no clue who but while I think Richarlison is a really good player, I don’t think he’s the style of striker we need. I actually think we need somebody more in Ings style than Watkins, that could feed off the creativity that Coutinho and Buendia will hopefully do next season. I think suits a Ings style than a Watkins style player, but even then it’s not right. Bizarrely it suits more Archers style than either of those two but it’s a massive ask to put that on Archers shoulders yet so I think we need another striker…god knows who though!

Depends what you are looking for in the game, if you are looking for a goal then after Ings and Watkins, then it would be Archer, if you are looking to see out the game it would be Davis. Horses for courses thing, I think they are level in choice. I’d personally choose Archer but that’s no shock is it but trying to be objective I’d go with my first paragraph.

I agree we need options but you missed Chuck off the list and Ings can play in the 10 role and arguably JJ, so even if you exclude Traore we still have options and while the squad is 25, generally most managers stick with a core of ~18 players for most of the minutes so Johnson might get very very little time compared to what he wants given we’ll only likely have just over 40 games.

I agree completely and a great suggestion. Maybe we’ll ship out the likes of Bailey and Traore and then he would be an alternate to then buy. I guess it depends on who leaves who we then bring in. We have to have a squad and alternatives but some areas are bloated in our squad but I, like you, like Johnson.

I like him but where would he fit for us? In the middle attack behind the 9 we already have Coutinho and Buendia and we are struggling to fit both in and then as a winger, well we don’t play with wingers and if we did we have the likes of Bailey and Traore already. I like the kid but we are overloaded in the positions he mostly plays so I’d rather a straight out No.9. Good shout though just bad timing for the squad!

1) I don’t play fifa, don’t play computer games really, just not my thing. 2) I give in, I don’t agree with you but you are entitled to your opinion. Southgate is poor and is incredibly lucky to have one of the best International squads with quality depth in the world. He’s just not good enough to get the best out of them. You don’t agree with this, that’s fine!

We literally almost won the last tournament but lost on penalties yet most England fans didn’t think we played that well because of Southgate restricting them. If we had played a bit better in the final we would’ve won the tournament. Your argument in the last line is just bizarre given this.

You seem to be the only one with this view. If you can’t see this is mostly Southgate then I don’t know what to tell you and you are in a very small minority in this view.
