Internal Server Error

PieFacE

Question

Lately i've been getting that quite a lot (below). Is that due to too many people being on? It's happening to me at the minute. Seems i'll click on something, get that error, and then click on the same thing again and it works. It's no big deal, just wondering if you're aware.?

"Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@villatalk.invisionzone.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

I don't know what that means. The hosting company are working on it. I imagine it'll be fixed before I know that it's been fixed, but I'll post updates if I get any.

Fundamentally though I need more server capacity and I don't want to pay for it myself (again). I'm exploring options but I think some people are using adblockers despite the friendly message at the top of the page when they do that.

Tragedy of the commons.

The Ads are far less intruisive here than on the old site though........

The only difference is that the little squares on the left are now replaced with the ad in the first article on each page. Perhaps you've just got used to them

A patch has been applied and no repeats of this error have occurred in the last hour.

It is possible this may happen again under extreme stress, but the fault was caused by us having so many very large topics. The perils of longevity.

How much are we talking?

I'm not sure I'd like to release that information, is it just curiosity?

I don't think Simon's ever posted a hard-and-fast number but I do seem to remember that it was about a grand a year when he was self-hosting.

You're right Levi I've not publicly posted a figure, but if that figure was correct, it was probably from about 4 years ago :)
