I honestly don't think we will see a major update this year

I think there may be a hardware upgrade but nothing cosmetic.

Dunno, with the massive inroads Android are making into the smartphone market I think Apple have to do something cool. Dual Core processor, bigger screen, an antenna that actually works... ;)

I've heard Apple are going to invent widgets.

I've heard Apple are going to invent widgets.

That would make my year watching jobs demo widgets on the iphone selling it as some new miracle like they did with the fake multitasking. Then have the iphone sheep rave about it.

Would be the comedy event of the year. I'm sure he'll sell the bigger screen as if it's some new wonder though.

They'll probably round the corners off and put a black border around it though. That'll mean they invented it.

And the crowds will woop and cheer!

I must admit that really does annoy me at the keynotes when apple claim they invented something or theirs will be better than anything else.

It doesn't matter that it's a lie though, the important thing is that people believe it and buy into the sales pitch. Apple is a dangerous company though for investors, all their eggs are in 2/3 baskets and they need to have new products to come as their market share gets eaten into buy superior products at a lower price as time ticks by.

I can see their market share in the smartphone market taking another big hit in the coming 12/18 months with the super phone android handsets being the new top of the line phones, while Nokia / Windows combo will certainly take some market share off both apple and google. iPad sales growth will become more important. But that too will be eaten into over time.

iPod, iPhone, iPad is there another i something to keep their profits high? Interesting time ahead

Apple's investors and shareholders are in clover. The value of apple shares is phenomenally higher than it was a few years ago

Dunno how they'll do in the next 5 years, but in a flat or falling market, they've made a fortune. They must be doing something right, on that front.

The computers are more popular than they've ever ben, iPods and then iPhones and iPads have created new markets, more or less.

I don't believe they have the levels of invention perhaps that other companies do, yet they are able to make ideas work in a way that people like. Their skills are in making stuff that people want. The hype is almost self perpetuating.

It might strike people as annoying or whatever, but it's something that just about every other company would kill to be able to do. And then the kit they make seems to keep the majority of their customers pretty content with what they get. People might say it's a myth, or image or fashion or god knows what. Doesn't matter. They sell loads of shiny things to people who enjoy using them. And they work.

This might sound in poor taste, but if Steve Jobs' health is as bad as it is rumoured to be then Apple really might take a hit when he isnt there any more. Just look at Microsoft in the post Bill Gates era, the only thing that you would say has been a massive success for them in the past five years has been Xbox.

Oh I know they've made stellar growth, I mean truly phenomenal growth in the past 10 years. But it's been fuelled by an innovation model, every few years they come along with a new thing that becomes a selling phenomenon.

It all started with the iPod, that's when their growth excelerated with the help of the iMac flat screen pc unit. Then the iPhone, then iPad. But their share price is based on their profits and their profits are based on being ahead of the curve as once the market gets competitive they get into trouble but there's always been a new product at the time to be the new focus of the company, they rely on a few key products for all their profits which is a risky model.

For example, apple source all their components from vendors and they're constructed in Taiwan. Samsung say want / are muscling in on the smartphone market they can deliberately run a low or zero margin on that division to establish market share because they develope tech, then build a factories to produce it and then sell it. They have no supply issues and no reliance on suppliers of the level apple are.

Samsung make money from everything from airconditioners to tvs to phones so they do not have a product concentration so they can run these margins putting pressure on apple.

The same thing happened to apple in the 90's with Windows and IBM compatible pc's. They couldn't compete with specialists who focussed different pieces of hardware and once all the pieces come together you have an intel cpu, nVidia graphics card, ibm hard drive, crucial memory, Asus motherboard all running Windows software.

Now Apple will always be a very profitable company but I think a point will come when they run out of ideas and it is no longer a growth stock and so falls in price to a level, what level I don't know. But it's very interesting more because I work in finance and love technology.

Rev Vista killed Microsoft. Nobody wanted to leave XP for it as it was a rubbish OS and most people remain content on XP. I run XP. Then the botching of WinMo, absolute shocker. They let Google buy some company and get Android to where it is now. Silly silly Microsoft.

Samsung make money from the iPhone too. Samsung's biggest customer is Apple. It seems crazy that they are suing each other considering how much they rely on each other!

Very true Rev, but Samsung were taking the piss and assuming that Apple wouldn't mind them copying their phone style as they were a customer. The Ace is an iPhone 4 clone ffs.

But the point I'm making is Samsung can run a low margin on one division to get a market share which will be something Apple can't do. If Sony owned all of their phone company they could do the same.

The tech Samsung cram into the Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 is absurd and they only do it to establish a market position. They can do it because they have all the factories to build it all.

Have you just copied that from Wikipedia or something?

Apples strength is their design imo.

No that's called an opinion, quoting all my posts in here and in off topic trying to bait me with one liners is not an opinion.

Ah I get it, you've never written a post that long without copying it from Wikipedia. Makes sense.
