TheFish Posted July 25, 2023 Visiting Supporter Share Posted July 25, 2023 I don't think anything can be extrapolated from that game lads. It was a friendly where fringe players were given game time, the focus was on fitness, shapes, probably putting a few in the shop window. It's daft to think either side took the game too seriously, or played their full strength team. I mean we started with Anderson, Dubravka, Dummett, and Murphy. None of them would likely be in our first choice 11. Second half we experimented with 5 at the back. It doesn't matter, it's a friendly.
AvfcRigo82
3-3. Not a bad result in an experiment game.
Zhan_Zhuang
Just watched extended highlights. Villa looked decent and a first run-out for many of the players... Buendia, Philogene, Kellyman all looked decent. Konsa possibly could have done better for two of the goals and Villa looked very shaky with that long ball the Barcodes kept playing. I saw a lot of hype about Tonali and comments on Social Media that he had a really good game but it didn't look like it from the highlights; got bodied by Buendia and McGinn a few times. I suppose you could say the same for Kamara! Good to see so many of the young Villa players out there and performing well.

Villa broke Newcastle's defence for our three goals (especially the first two) The goals we shipped were more on us than Newcastle. Philogene had a really good outing ... happy to take on defenders. The third goal was his assist really. Beundia had an excellent game ... detractors please note The second half was OK a little disjointed ... tough to read too much into it. The youngsters did OK Pau and Carlos (to me) looked a little bit out of it ... not too surprising. I think they would be OK with the first team around them. edit ... Olsen not as bad as some make out Just some rando thoughts. Yeah, agree with a lot of this. Villa's passing and movement was pretty slick; our back three all at sea - I don't see 3-4-2-1 surviving for long. We exploited your high line, which I think could cost you a few goals against decent teams. Buendia excellent, Anderson excellent, Karama a bit lost, Tonali a bit overwhelmed. I think ViIla will be very strong next season and I wouldn't be surprised if you were ahead of us. Emery a more sophisticated coach than Howe, but Howe has the desire to improve. Both Emery and Howe showing how a quality manager can completely transform a club and how the likes of Gerrard and Lampard are absolutely stealing a living.
