sir_gary_cahill
It’s 2-2 between Villa and Newcastle u23s, Tyreik Wright and Jacob Ramsey have scored for us, James Chester and Orjan Nyland are playing for us, I think it’s at Villa Park. Popular Post OutByEaster? Posted November 4, 2019 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted November 4, 2019 That was excellent entertainment tonight. We played a team that had some obvious strengths and some obvious weaknesses and dominated the game between the two penalty boxes. At the business end we struggled a bit more, with no real natural striker on the end of a lot of busy creativity and a baffling inability to defend crosses or set pieces. A lovely little lobbed finish by Tyreik Wright from a deep cross, a confident finish from Jacob Ramsey from a through ball and a poachers prod from Michael Tait gave us a 3-2 win. At the other end Newcastle crossed the ball into our box four times and had it in our net on three of those occasions - one disallowed for offside - and they looked like scoring every time they had a chance to get cross over. We moved the ball really well, looked bright and inventive and got better as the game went on - I think there's the potential for this to become a very good side. Some ratings: Nyland (6) - there are times when he looks really classy; good with the ball at his feet, really good distribution, decent shot stopping - you look at him and think there's a really good player in there - but there's this nagging doubt when the ball is in the air. Neither of the goals were his fault, but we didn't look at all comfortable with the ball in the air on our six yard box and some of the responsibility for that has to rest with him. A pity, because everything else was excellent. Walker (8) - I thought the pigeon calved mini-colossus was excellent tonight. He's the type of young man your dad hoped you'd grow up to be - only smaller. He's brave, he's determined, he's a really good defender, he makes good decisions, works hard, stays immensely calm and has a natural leadership about him. I thought he did brilliantly and was our best player. Revan (6) - looks composed and worked hard - positionally good but with the odd stray pass. He's a very passable centre back at this level - the question for him is whether he can go beyond it. Chester (6) - at times anonymous - and that ain't a bad thing in a centre back. When he had to he battled, when he wanted to he showed a bit of class - he can find a moment longer and a yard more to work in than anyone else that played tonight - he'll be disappointed with the goals we conceded. Rowe (6) - an up and down game for Callum - some good and some bad - he's gritty though and his attitude means he might make a mistake but he'll always come back at you. Guy (6) - not quite sure what to make of him - he was largely sensible in a more withdrawn role in midfield where it's hard to catch the eye. Struggled at times and at others looked really relaxed and comfortable. I look forward to seeing him again. Archer (5) - nothing really came off for him today, probably best illustrated by a wild slice at an open goal late on. Frustrating, but we've seen enough to chalk it up as no more than a bad day at the office. Clarke (7) - he's a proper midfielder - he battles, he makes good decisions, he passes the ball well. He probably lacks a "thing" of his own, something that gives him a little more than all of the very solid graft that he does. He's like Craig Gardner without the distance shooting if you'll forgive me mentioning the name. At this level he changes games. Vassilev (6) - when I've seen him play before it's been in midfield - I'm sure I've seen him play out wide, but the last time I saw him he really impressed me in the middle of the park as a box-to-box midfielder. He played as a number nine tonight and while he hustles and bustles and gives it his all, he doesn't look a natural finisher or someone who has that bit of movement you want in a striker. What he does do is run - he'll run all day - he's powered by the same stuff that McGinn and Milner are - their centrebacks will be knackered. Ramsey (6) - everything he did during the game had a touch of quality about it - he looks good on the ball, he makes good runs, his finish was assured and at times he looked like a senior player getting minutes. The problem was that we didn't see him enough - he needs to find ways to become central to games, when he does, he'll have the ability to dominate them. Wright (6) - in the first half he looked really impressive - he worked the flank, got in behind the defence and was a constant menace - a more natural finisher would have had more goals in the game, but you'll struggle to find a more natural or sweet finish than his little lob over the keeper for our first goal. I've not seen him in the flesh for a bit and he's growing stronger and developing, he tired in the second half but he's still very young and he's talented, aggressive and not scared of a hairstyle. I think he's got a real chance. subs Odutayo showed flashes of his exciting ability to run with the ball - and was involved in our winning goal at the end - a sweeping move breaking out from the back resulted in a ball played across the box to him and there he was, six yards out on his own and sure to score - the ball hit him on his standing foot and bobbled up into the air next to him - thankfully Tait was on hand to nip in and push it past the keeper. If I were Colin I'd claim an assist. Tait looked delighted. I think we'll see more of both of them. Other than that, Villa Park was beautiful under lights, the referee was sort of okay but let a lot go, Dean Smith and his staff watched on from a box and I got a night's football, with parking, chips and curry sauce and a beer for less than a tenner. Sadly they're off into hibernation at Bodymoor Heath for a bit now - I hope to see them back at Villa Park on 8th April. 2
BOF Posted November 6, 2019 Author Moderator Share Posted November 6, 2019 Stats updated after our 3-2 victory over Newcastle. The 2 Uniteds continue to power on with 4-2 and 4-1 wins. The good news is the 3 teams above us all dropped points and now our game in hand against West Brom is to go 3rd in the league. Jacob Ramsey gets his 8th attacking return in 8 appearances this season. Nyland makes his first start since Man Utd in September. Next up is the Premier League Cup group game at home to Doncaster Rovers next Monday evening. We lost our opening PLC game 3-0 against Exeter while they beat Portsmouth 1-0. Next up in the league we travel to the all-conquering Hammers on November 22nd. West Ham have 9 wins from 10 games this season and a 2-2 draw away at 2nd placed Man Utd. If we get anything from that game it'll be a very impressive feat. West Ham have the 3 top scorers in the league this season* and they're all midfielders according to soccerway. Anthony Scully is on 10 goals. Nathan Holland is on 8 goals and Daniel Kemp is on 6. * there are 3 other players also on 6 goals

Unused Sub
When to Keys Park last night. Overall, a disappointing evening losing 0-1 to Doncaster in the Premier League Cup. First half was very much even, not much between the teams. Not much goal action either. Searle being the busier keeper, saving a well took free kick from the edge of the box. Just before half time, for reasons unknown to me, we were awarded a penalty. Odutayo struck it well to the goalies left hand side, the ball rebounded of the inside of the post and out to safety. Not long after that, Doncaster were down to 10 men, no. 8 Greaves received a second booking. As you would expect, the second half was all Villa. Well almost all Villa. The only goal of the night can from a Doncaster break away. We had Lots of half chances, just couldn’t get a good goalscoring opportunity. For us, Tait had a good game. Always looking to be on the half turn. Just his final pass was lacking. Revan was the best of the back line, Archer looked good in patches. Sea played ok too, some good centre forward play when holding the ball up. Just needed to be better in the final third. Team: Searle, Walker, Rowe, Revan, Bridge (M. Sohna), Birch (Vassilev), Archer, Brunt, Sea, Tait, Odutayo. Unused subs: Hooper, Guy, Marschell.

BOF Posted November 13, 2019 Author Moderator Share Posted November 13, 2019 Stats updated for the almost mythical (based on internet content) Premier League Cup fixture against Doncaster. So then: Walker – As usual: solid, hard working, aggressive. Bridge – Did fine, suffered a knock late on and was subbed. It maybe just his running style, but sometimes looks quite casual. Brunt – had mixed game. Lots of endeavour, needs to be better with his passing.

Dadster23 Posted November 14, 2019 Visiting Supporter Share Posted November 14, 2019 There’s a spectator stand now in place by the floodlit show pitch on the “new bit” at Bodymoor. The pitch is now being used for games, just guessing the final H and S clearance for public access to evening games is still to come as there are still things being done up there.
